sound card and front audio ports

Hi,
I'm thinking of adding a sound card to my rig, but I don't know which one. I want to be still able to use my front audio and mic with my sound card, but don't want to do any heavy modding. I've seen posts about all these connector types and I'm totally lost and don't know whats going on. Could someone point me in the right direction, or maybe even a picture tutorial would really help my understanding.
