need help with x850xt "studdering" ingame

This is a problem related to the use of X850XT card and counterstrike. So if u want to skip a whole lot of reading when your not interested in this, just well..dont

I recently (1 week ago) bought a new graphicscard ( HIS ATI Radeon X850XT PE 256MB Ice Q - Vivo / DVi (AGP) ). Adn then formatted my brand new Harddrive aswell. Then I reinstalled windows XP (tried both sp 1 and sp 2 installs etc, just for future reference when u try to help me) and installed all the lates drivers for my hardware (wich is: AMD XP3000+, 1024 MB DDR ram, nforce2 based mainboard (abit, dont recall the exact model), SB Audigy 2 soundcard.

Now this may seem as a geeky proplem to have, but when I started STEAM and tried to play Counterstrike again I got..hmm.. like a motion studder? Its really hard to describe but I´ll do my best. It lost the "smooth" feel I had prior with my old card (9800XT).

Everything kind off studders when i move my crosshair around or when people are moving infront of me. It almost feels as if my card only rendered 2 out of 3 screens if that makes any sense Ive tried just about everything. V-sync on/off (should probably mention that I have no bandwith realted issues or fps issues of any sorts (well I do get some weird fps drops at times, but I can live with it even tho I know I shouldnt have that aswell).

I tried reinstalling different ATI drivers, modified and WHQL ones. Ive tried different resolutions and it seems to decrease in intensity (the studdering) when I raise it from 640x480 (Ive allways used that res. so dont tell me to change it ) to lets say 1024 for example, but its still there and very noticable. I reinstalled windows plenty of times and it still doesnt work..

I bought a new HDD just incase and..still there. Reinstalled steam, tweaked all of the "known" config commands and yet..nothing..
The card itself seems to be fine and I get good 3dmark scores compared to similar systems etc..

If anyone out there have a friend who had this problem and "fixed" it or have any clues what so ever as to what it might be.. Please write something.. Im out of ideas and getting really really sick of it.

this could be one or more issues causing your problem.

one could be heat. the other could be the motherboard. the last could be your memory.

i had a problem with studdering with an older card, as soon as i bought new memory it was better tho not fixed, then i bought a new motherboard and it went away.

it also helped alot to close all applications and processes before playing, this included disabling the anitvirus - which helped alot and any other internet related app... and apps that contacted sources on the internet.

heat is also a big issue... make sure you have some good flow through the box and through the CPU and GPU. dont just say "ohh i have 11 fans im fine" thats BS and stupid to think such a thing. you can have 11 fans and have the worst air flow, make sure to channel air to the places that need it... i suggest getting better heat sinks for your heat sources "thermalright" and "swiftech" are two of the top brands to get for max performance (others might do).

annother thing to mention... the nforce drivers for the motherboard could help... i had fixed this problem annother time (ya i have formatted and had many motherboards with this problem and ati cards.

try a differnt version of the nforce drivers. mabe even use drivercleaner that might have helped me once i belive (clean the cab files too).
im not sure what version helped most at all. i currently dont have many problems however i did have this problem primarly with CS and CS source (and battlefield 1942). no problems anymore with my current hardware.

Yeah, that's the first thing I would check is if you have the latest Chipset drivers.

as a matter of fact i did upgrade to the pc power and cooling 510 and then all my problems vanished all together.

i forgot to mention that one too. alot of money but you can find some that are as good or around that. being a 400 watt or whatever is crap, you must get a GOOD power supply. something like the antec NEO power is also a good one and i think annother one from OZ (the ram compainy).

Have you checked the actual game cvars?

cl_interpolate 0 has a shutter effect because it removes the merging of frames related to player position

cl_interpolate 1 w/ cl_interp 0.01 should smooth things out bit

This is straight out of my autoexec.cfg and includes all Net related clientside cvars. You could try cutting and pasting to your own autoexec and see if it helps.

Code:
// _Set netcode settings_
// _adjusts hitboxes and netcode settings for optimal registration_
cl_cmdrate 101
cl_interp 0.01
cl_interpolate 1.0
cl_lagcomp_errorcheck 1
cl_lagcompensation 1
cl_updaterate 101
cl_rate 20000
cl_smooth "1"
cl_smoothtime "0.01"
rate 25000
cl_dynamiccrosshair 0
Otherwise if you already checked drivers and defragged then you may have corrupted the folder structure in the Program Files/Valve sub folders. Save your configs, sprites, skins, etc. then delete all content on your machine and redownload from steam.

Best of luck,

ΣvöŁ™

There seems to be a problem with nForce2 based motherboards, and Radeons cards. This is quite known (google up "nForce 2 stuttering" lol.. loads). There are different fixes, which have worked for different people. My one, was I just ignored it until the next time the PC was started, then it never came up again .

Go to your console (from within Counterstrike) and type:

cl_smooth 0

if that doesn't work try:

cl_smooth 1

Should fix you up. I had the same problem.
