Radeon x700 & Fan Question
I just purchased an ATI Radeon x700 Pro.
card runs great, no errors so far [i only play wow, ill test it out tonight with HL2 and UT2004]. But i ahve a question reguarding the fan on board.
When the computer starts up, I hear the fan. You notice it cause its a dif sound than what im used to from my box. After about 5 seconds it shuts down. And i dont\havent heard from it again.
my question is, is the fan supposed to be running constantly? Or will it run when needed? I dont think anything is bad on it, because the fan always starts up when the comptuer first does. If something was wrong, id have to assume it wouldnt keep repeating the same process.
so im curious as to know if this is normal.
Thanks

Did you look at it after the comp is running for a bit? The fan should always be spinning. Upon bootup, my card makes a different sound as well, as did my old 8500 - it's a lot louder.

It runs at various speeds depending on it's temperature. The fan spins at 100% speed for a few seconds on bootup then goes down to it's default operational level. (18% on my X850XT)

Well far as i know the fan should run always, the speed at wich it runs could
change depending on the card and system setup, 3rd party tools etc...

It spins at 100% until the video BIOS is initialized for the first time (Hitting reset and doing a hard reset will invoke the same behavior), and then once the video bios and consequently the monitor for the GPU are on it spins down to reduce noise.
Hearing it at tht level during games means its getting too hot and is a warning sign

Yeah it would be.
My X800XT AiW only spins up to 100% when its on auto once it hits 90 something degrees. I keep it on full anyway, and you CAN hear it, but it only gets that way on auto when its 90+ degrees. If I turn on the case fans to medium and leave it on auto, it never ever gets that high. It goes to 80 or 82 but it doesn't spin up to full. Only when its at dangerous levels (90-100+) does it do that.
So if you constantly hear it at high speeds and you're not using ATI Tool to change the fan speed, it is a kind of warning sign. I'm not saying its 100% accurate, or a life and death indicator...just a general warning.

Alot of fans spin at slower then "Normal" to be silent then when under load
when the temps increse the fan kicks up to full speed "normal". Some fans
have more then one but alot just use two. When you system 1st start the fans
kick in full speed then drop to a reduced speed if it a thermal controled fan.
The point is to reduce noise when in not under hevy load conditions...

Thank you Captain Obvious :P
This is a pretty pointless discussion, all we do is keep paraphrasing what the other says
