Did I just blow up my 700$ video card?

So I received my Arctic ATI Silencer 5 Rev 2 today and got it installed on my ATI X850XT. I also added some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste but when I plugged the card into the PC, I'm getting a scrambled screen (artifacting) but I did notice some red flashing message. No idea what it could be and yes, the molex connector is on and the fan turns.

I don't know what to do! This damn card cost my nearly 700$ and there's no way I can RMA now.. did I just blow up my card??

Good thing man That would have been really bad. Was the silencer installed wrong or was the fan bad or something?

did you get the correct silencer for your card? The NV5 is meant for the 6800GT/Ultra. The NV4 is the one you need for your ATI card.

did you forget to plug in the power connector? There is a message in red that pops up if you forget.

yeah that one should be fine, the NV ones are just for NV cards, although they might work on some ati cards

The fan was running fine. I triple-checked it and there Molex connector was properly plugged in. I don't think the fan would spin if it wasn't but still, I made sure it was seated properly.

Yup, that's the one I got. It fit on there great. Every RAMsink was right on the dot and every hole lined up perfect. Guess I just got one of the duds.. I contacted the store and they'll RMA it.

It could have a reversed wire somewhere, so it puts in the wrong amount of voltage or it flows the wrong way

Reversed wire? Hmm, doubt it. There only two wires involved those are form fitted. (molex and on-baord fan control) No idea what's wrong with the unit.

[EDIT] I contacted the store who sold the Silencer. They offered a refund or exchange but I went for store credit and will order a 36gb Raptor next pay.. I'm not screwing around with that video card again!

I would.

Just go buy a Zalman heatsink for it and you'll be fine.

Right now my friend uses a Zalman that he had, and his Arctic Silencer had much the same kind of problem after a week, but he got the Zalman and it works just as well and problem free
