can't install 9700...

I've done a bit of researching and have not found a single thing pertaining to the kind of problem i am having. Right now, im using a radeon 9200, works fine, catalyst 5.3 drivers. I bought a radeon (ati btw), 9700 128mb off of ebay. Guy has good feedback, my friend bought the same exact card off of him, got it to work after some power supply issues. I take the 9200 out put the 9700, attatch extra power thing, start computer, then only crazy blocks/lines/ weird stuff comes up on the screen. I can't get to bios with that card in, nothing, me or anyone i know have ever heard of or seen this? Anyone have any idea what is going on??? thanks.

edit: the bios settings are correct im pretty sure, i checked them with the 9200 in

First up, welcome to the forums!

Ok, here's the deal: It could be that there are remenants of the old drivers/settings still around. Did you uninstall the drivers from the Add/Remove Programs section before swapping cards? Both the Control Panel and Drivers listing, or even the using ATI Software Uninstall listing? Can you boot into safemode (hitting F8 before Windows boots) with the new card installed?

First, uninstall the drivers for the card as mentioned above (don't run this in safemode though). Boot into safemode, cancel all requests to install the drivers (if it asks), and run a program called Driver Cleaner which you can find on this site. When you run this program check "select multiple...", and pick all ATI items to clean EXCEPT the IGP ones. Run the program, and reboot when it's done. When Windows reboots it will prompt you to install the drivers. Hit 'Cance' for all of the windows that pop up, and reinstall the drivers as normal.

Note: If you need to put the old card back in, boot into Windows, and uninstall the drivers that way. Shut the machine down, swap the cards, and boot into safe mode. Then it's just a matter of following the above.

Lemme know if that helped.

thanks man, but no go. No, i can't even get into safe mode with the other card, but i tried it with the card im using now, uninstalled everything ati, shut down machine, put in new card, same thing happened. Anything else you can think of? I'm taking my card over to my friend's house tomorrow to check if it will work in his computer, (if it doesn't, then obviously there's something wrong with the card because he has the same EXACT one). HELP!!

the card is more than likely cooked. It wouldn't be drivers if it is happening before it gets into windows.

I'd have to agree. After going over it again this would be the only other conclusion I could come up with. More than likely one of the RAMDACs are fried.
