From what I understand from my friends who have both, the ATI Cards are better but the nvidia Linux drivers are far more mature than the ATI ones.

the fx5200 is one of the worst nvidia cards to date, do not get it if you play any newer games (call of duty to current games will not play well)
even if you do run linux, get the ati.

btw I find the nVidia drivers way the **** harder to install under linux. Better, I'd say...but JEEZ so hard to install. ATI was alot easier. I didnt have to RTFM at all on the ATI drivers.

The Nvidia 5200 is used as a server card... They are not exactly worthwhile cards at all... 9600 will runs blazing firier circles around it in XP.... but ATM, besides the new release of the ATI linux drivers which i've no known feedback on.... nvidia still is best choice for Linux... bites to have to use a 5200FX just because of linux......
What do you plan to do in linux?..... I'm having a sudden thought that you game on XP and do work under linux.. correct?

just as a referance, the fx5200 is worse than the 60 dollar radeon 9550. in fact, the fx5200 is probably about as bad, if not worse than the mx400. simply put, if you want to play ANY games, even if it's something old like Counter strike, you want to get either a nvidia 5700Ultra or above (if you go for nvidia) OR go for a radeon 9550XT or above if you go for ATI. the 9550XT is a 9600XT that has been underclocked, it costs 100USD and performs on par with the 9600Pro.

better later then never
look at it this way....
5200, 2 pixel pipes, poor excuse for a video card, dx9 support
9600, 4 pixel pipes, dx9 support, higher clocks
9600's should wipe the floor with the 5200, in every case....
edit
if your getting an LE 256mb is over kill! Though there are some small advantages you much better off getting a 9600 pro 128mb or a 9600xt 128mb then the LE. LE's only have like "64 bit" memory thats 1/2 the bandwith massive performance loss! from 128 bit versions...

Buy a used 9700 pro or 9800pro and you will be much better off for the same price.

hell get a 9500 and you'll be better off.
Dont get LE or SE versions. They just arent good. Unless its a 9800SE. Then it can be softmodded(usually). good stuff.

I concur
If you get any ati card, you should always spend a little more and get a pro or xt version. Unless you are doing softmodding.

9500 better than a 9700pro or 9800pro? No, I don't think so. For the price you can get a 9700p or 9800p, it's the best deal for the price if you can afford it.
EDIT- 9800PRO 256BIT ONLY 128BIT is GARBAGE

erm i have the 9800 pro and it is 256bit, its 128mb MEMORY instead of 256 like the XT board.
if it was only 128bit why can i make it run faster in benchmarks than the XT?

he's talking about the 128bit memory interface boards. you have a 128MB 256bit card that's good, but if you have a 128MB 128bit card, that's bad.

I was warning him about the fact that there are some 128 BIT cards out there- he needs to stay away from them.

ah apologies, the way you made it sound that all 9800pro's were rubbish
yeh i think they are suppose to be 256bit, i think i remember the atlantis models having this problem and they were charging $30 or something silly to have it changed for a 256bit version.

Actually the Ati Radeon 9550 is a reasonable price at the moment if you're on a budget. A few friends have just bought them.

They were giving away a voucher to send of with your proof of purchase whereby you were sent a key back for the Bronze edition from Steam. Not sure if it's still running though.
