Smilie Some help for me and my 9600xt please

I have a (Gecube) 9600XT 128mb card, and so does a mate of mine (although a different brand). In his control panel, he has this "overdrive" thing. I don't. I never have. I'm using the Omega 8.07's, and they rock, but in my pre-Omega days, I always used ATI's Catalyst dvr's. No matter what version, I never saw this "Overdrive" panel. A friend of mine told me that only the XT version had the Overdrive gizmo, and that I probably had a "vanilla" 9600. As I type (two fingered ) I look at the box the card came in, and it distinctly says "9600XT". In my control panel adapter screen it also say 9600. (no XT). (That said, I'm scoring 36590 on AQ3,no OC'ing, so I'm pretty happy with what I have. )

Before I rip open my case, drag the card out and start going Guantanamo bay on it's ass until it tells me who it really is, has anybody got any suggestion?

Thanks in advance

PS I Saw a funny bumper sticker today: "The proctologist called: they found your head .

Some manufacturers left out the overdrive option. I've done some research into this, since I at one time owned a Sapphire 9600xt. Apparently Sapphire, although they did not specify this, only had a select few 9600xts that had the overdrive option. AFAIK there is no way to enable it, it's a hardware thing.

The overdrive option, hardware-wise, is a thermal diode. If it is not installed, then the Overdrive Software option will not appear. If you still want to overclock, use Riva-Tuner or some other software to crank it up. Those 9600XT's can be easily overclocked to some really fast speeds. Mine would run at a 600Mhz core with no problem, with the stock cooler.

Thanks for the info

Thanks guys, that all makes sense. You mentioned RivaTuner; I've got omega's drivers that have radlinker built in, and I've upgraded that to the latest version. Would you rate Rivatuner as a better O'C'er, or is radlinker good enough? And you have really got me thinking; 600mhz eh? Well, I can't help myself; I've got to give it a go!

Question; what about the memory speed? What have you done with that? I've heard that it is the memory speed that can have the greatest impact o'clocking-wise. Is that true?

Once again thanx in advance, and I'll post my results here once my comp and me re-enter the Earth's atmosphere .

I didn't mess around much with the memory speed. Radlinker should work fine for you. Just back off the OC when you start seeing artifacts.
