Ultra Quality Doom 3 X800XT

I'm trying an X800XT with Doom 3, can anyone tell me whether its okay to try the ultra quality option, will this use some of the sytem RAM as video memory to compensate for the card having 256mb.

Someone told me they ran in Ultra and it looked great, can it damage the card in anyway or the system??

You are fine to run Doom 3 in Ultra Sets in your system , it will not damage the card or your system in anyway. Have fun!

why do they say its only for cards with 512Mb, i wasn't aware that there were any available with that amount of Video memory, high quality looks great, looking forward to trying ultra.

Ultra setting uses alot of your vidcards memory because of the high amount of texture work being done to render each scene displayed on your monitor. Thats why it is recomended a 512mb vidcard, but as they are no vidcards available at the current time with that amout of memory you are sure to use a 256mb vidcard as long as you have enough system ram available at your system. Its also recomended that you increase the amount of your agp memory size in your bios to 256mb or more so that the game can use it in case the current amount available on your vidcard is not enough.

Thanks for the tip, how are you finding your X800XT ???

I'm using one for a while, i've swapped with a friend, my pain in the butt 6800 Ultra to see if it will work better in his system, been nothing but trouble since i've had it, the X800XT works great on everything i've tried so far, might see if he wants a permanent swap !!!

I couldn't decide whether to get a 6800 or an X800XT, i'm sorry now that i went for the 6800 its been nothing but hassle, if it works well in my mate's sytem he'll take it and give me his X800XT, i'd be more than happy with that at this stage, i've been weeks trying to get that 6800 heap of cr$#p working properly, even changed mobo and made no difference, i might sell it off and buy an X800 if i have to give this one back.

Is there a better driver version to use on the X800 ?? only using what came on the CD with the card at the moment.

I´ll assume your using Cats 4.5, since that's the Catalyst version that usually ships with x800 cards. I would try this version; CATALYST beta posting of 8.07 driverThats the one im using, and if you plan to play Doom 3 as you stated above that's the best version of drivers to use with it.

Just because you don't know how to use your hardware and work it properly doesn't make it crap you know...it means you're stupid

Now that is totally uncalled for, please, in the future think before you post. Please edit your post.

I did think that out, and I see no reason to edit my post if telling the truth. He has created two seperate threads in the Nvidia forum bitching that his GPU is broken (Which he is mistaking with the video processor, which isn't even broken according to nvidia). He doesn't even know what the hell he is talking about. Maybe if he was respectful enough to make one thread and leave an open mind for help something may change. Not to mention his lack of information to help him.

Now excuse me but if a moderator finds it unsuitable, so be it he can delete my post, but until then...

*disregards mainman's statement*

Marcus please, lets not add to the situation anymore and get back to the thread at hand.

In answer to your original question, yes ultra quality will be using system ram and its recommended you have 2 gig of ram to use ultra quality on the current 256 meg GFX hardware. To be honest I see very little difference in ultra and high modes.

Yep you're right sorry about that, i have 2 gig of RAM so it should be okay then, i did remember reading on the net something about not to run at Ultra set but it may have been talking about performance degradation as opposed to damage.

Ultra quality basically removes all form of compression to the textures, this will use up to and around 450-500 meg of graphics ram. It is possible to run in ultra quality with 1 gig of system ram but it proves to be a mixed affair with occassional stuttering on loads etc, you can tweak the ini to help with caching etc, but I dont really think its worth the effort just to run in ultra mode. I can run it fine in ultra quality with two gig of DDR2 (the OCZ I reviewed front page) and an ASUS PCIe X800XT with an overclocked extreme edition @ 3.7gig+ and its totally smooth, but thats a pretty high end system.

The game is rubbish anyway hopefully they or some other company can make something playable with the wonderful engine.

See what we had to put up with? My statement is perfectly on the dot with reactions like these. In fact, we never got to suggest anything to him for he never gave us the info we asked for. Did you check the rails on your PSU? Did you see if it was shot? Also I've been building PC's since I was in 7th grade, so at this point I assume that if you have been in PC's longer then I you would be able to figure it out. Instead you ask for help, then go to the ATI forums calling Nvidia shit because you seem to be the only on with problems at this point?

Look, he even double posted! Aww, how childish of you...

Sorry Zardon, but I have a problem with idiots. Note, I didn't call him an idiot, just that I have a problem with them and not for there to be any random assumptions that I had directed this end statement to him. If I had I would have just called him an idiot, which I did not

Hey you have a problem with "idiots" and I have a problem with people who ignore my most basic requests to stop bickering on this site.

Perhaps I didnt make it clear enough, so this time I will. Stop. im in a good mood today relaxing so I dont want to have to remove people from the site, but if I see this conversation continuing between you two guys then both of you will be leaving.

This thread is done.
