If youre upping only the core, and youre computer starts crashing/freezing, id say that the card wants more voltage to the gpu in this case. Memory-overclocking i think only shows flashing textures and doesnt crash/freeze the system but gpu is very dependant on the voltage.
I had to up my Sapphire's voltage to 1.63vgpu to get core running 630 and just to let you now, few mates are running their xt's at 650 with 1.5vcore so its a different situation with every card.
Anyway, your descriptions are much the same i had at the start with my card, so if you want higher mhz, gpu needs more juice
