Pissed Asus 9800Pro 256MB freezing PC! Please help!

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forums and this is my first post. I've had my PC since early March, and have had no problems with it until recently.

My PC has been freezing. In the middle of a game (Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne is the one that first did this), the PC just...freezes. The sound turns into a continuous "beep" noise, the screen freezes, and after about one second, the monitor turns off as it does when the PC is off, i.e. the monitor's power light flashes and the screen is off (but the frozen PC is still on).

I thought it may just be that game, but then it started freezing while I was just doing stuff in Windows. I updated my drivers to the latest Catalyst, no help. Latest Omega drivers, no help. I thought it may be SP2, so I uninstalled that. It kept freezing.

I then did a complete reformat/reinstall (SP1, not SP2), with the latest Omega drivers. I also tried the latest Creative and kx Project drivers for my Audigy2 ZS.

Then I thought it may be a heat issue, although my temps have been fine I think (CPU ~42-44, MB ~32-33). However, I don't know how to check my GPU temps, so I'm not completely sure on that. But there is nothing in the 3 PCI slots next to the AGP slot in my case. My sound card is in the very bottom slot.

Right above the bottom slot is my wireless card, which I installed recently. I have thought about removing this, but since the system does not systematically freeze, I would not know if it worked for sure or not for a while (and no wireless card equals no internet ).

So, first of all, thanks to those who have read so far! I do not know what else to do. I have thought about buying a VGA cooler, but I don't know how overheating could be a problem, because I have not overclocked anything on my PC. Everything is at stock speed, but also with stock cooling. I have an Antec Sonata case, which has a 120mm fan in the back, and I have had another 120mm fan installed in the front since I built the PC.

After reading about 9800Pro crashes on this forum, I also thought about the PSU being a problem. But my case came with an Antec TruePower 380W PSU (which I have been told is decent).

My system specs are as follows:

Case: Antec Sonata w/ 2 120mm fans (1 in front, 1 in back)
PSU: Antec TruePower 380W
Mobo: Asus K8V Deluxe K8T800
CPU: Athlon64 3200+
RAM: 1 GB [512MBx2] PC3200 DDR SDRAM (Corsair XMS)
GPU: Asus Radeon 9800Pro 256MB
Sound: Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
HDD: WD 74GB Raptor
IBM 120GB IDE (don't know specifics of this drive)

Everything, as I mentioned before, has stock cooling and is not OC'ed at all.

I'm confused and frustrated Someone please help...if you need any more info, I will be happy to provide it. Thanks in advance for any help!

well first off welcome. i would think it could be the fan on the 9800 is not working properly and it could be a powersupply issue. maybe the fans in it are not working or it could be ready to bite the dust. it could also be ram so run memtest and see if you are having some issues there. with what you posted it could be any number of hardwre issues good luck. http://www.memtest86.com/
