Hercules 9800 Pro Problems

I have had this card for a few months now and I have only just had a good game to test out the graphics, Doom 3.

I installed the game, got the settings running @ 1024*768 Medium detail. Get to the starting intro and the graphics are all jerky and choppy? Started playing the game and I was not impressed.

Did a fresh install today ; -

XP Pro SP1
Full motherboard drivers
Omega Cat4.9 drivers (first time using these)
Directx 9c

And its still the same, even on old games such as MOHAA and Quake 3.

My stsyem

AMD 2500 Mobile
Abit NF7-S v2.0 (Latest drivers and BIOS)
512MB Twinmos w/winbond 3200 RAM
Antec Truepower 430w

Anyone help me out with this as im getting a little annoyed!!

Cheers guys

Bouncy

hmm, sounds strange, have you set high values for anti-aliasing and filtering in the control panel, as that can cause a performance hit, set them to application preference and see if that helps. Did you install the graphics drivers after the motherboard ones, because if you did m/b after then that could have messed things up. Next thing, have you got your AGP set to 8x (you can check this in SMARTGART)? Just trying to think of things that might be having an effect. DO you run lots of other programmes in the background whilst playing games?

To see what sort of performance youre getting compared to others, go to www.3dmark.com and dowload 3dmark2003 and post the score you get.

I only run Norton 2003 in the background. I got roughly 5500+ in 3dmark03. I installed the motherboard drivers first, then I installed the omega cat 4.9s. Nut someone recommended that I installed the AGP chipset drivers so I downloaded the latest ones from Nvidia and installed them yesterday.

I haven't got the toolbar so I can access the D3D and OGL settings, the latest Omega drivers doesn't have them?

Cheers for the help, I am in need of more.

5500 in 3dmark03 sounds about right for a 9800pro. DOOM3 really likes more memory than 512Mb, when you drop back to the desktop does everything slow down for a few minutes? If it does that's because you are running from virtual memory since DOOM3 has just ate all your RAM. Even with a Gig installed in my system it still uses the pagefile quite a bit.

I ran DOOM3 just fine on my system (after cutting back on the oc a bit). 1024x768 medium settings just like you. Make shure you have drivers installed where you see the OpenGL and D3D tabs. Try the standard ATI cat 4.9's. Set the OpenGL tab to custom and select application preference on both anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering. Set vsync to always off. Have you checked your BIOS settings? Do you have dual ram? These things can have an impact.

BTW Norton is a damn resource hog, try playing without it, last time I checked a Norton anti virus program it ran 8 services. When I say without it I do mean completely removed from the system. Also check up on how you can turn off some services like system restore, terminal services and what not. That helps when you have only 512MB ram. I have 14 services running in XP.
