Last resort, system crashes

Currently I'm running an 9800 pro on an athlon xp 2800+, mobo Soyo k7-vmp2, 512mb ram, window's xp/sp1, Omega drivers (I'll get into that in a second) 400w power supply.
Problem, I'm getting VPU recovery problems even when I'm not running any games, just explorer. However, I did fix the problem with installing Omega drivers 2.35* (I'm not entirely sure the version, but it's the one before the newest ones.) So I know everyone would say...just keep those drivers, but I just got Doom 3 and it won't work with those driver version. Upon a clean install of the newest drivers, I'm getting crashes/lockups again.
Here's what I've tried and hasn't worked to get the latest drivers to work.

Clean install of all drivers, updated bios for Mobo, installed heatsinks/extra fans (actually I did that the first time I had problems, before I realized that the old drivers worked.),tried official ati drivers and omega drivers, reinstalled xp, tested other grafics cards (same problem...possible mobo problem?) turned smart gart on and off, changed agp setting in bios......I think that's all.

My real question is....why would those one set of drivers...older ones... work and not the new ones? What can I do to get my system stable and still play the most up to date games?

Any suggestions would help...I'm at my wits end.

Welcome to DriverHeaven

Is this a new 9800 PRO or this started to happen recently?
Is anything overclocked?
Have you tried disabling VPU recovery?

If it's a new one, you may want to try it with a different PC. You mentioned your old one had problem with your mobo? What was the problem? It maybe related to your problem now.

I've tested it on the mobo I used to have....it works fine. I think I'll try posting on the forum for Mobo's. I've pretty much isolated it to the mother board, and don't want to go out and get a new one when it works fine with the old drivers, just not on new games.

Have tried to deactivate second screen, change drivers etc...nothing works.

Well I gave up and bought a new Mobo....soyo Kt600 dragon ultra platinum. Guess what....same problem, until I adjusted the agp voltage to 1.6. I couldn't do this with the other card. So far everything is working...wish me luck
