is x800xt excessive?

i just wonder...is the performance increase between the x800pro and the x800xt worth 100 dollars? do you think it will ever be worth that much?

my mom is giving me 1000 dollars worth of graduation gifts, and she wants the gift to be something special that stands out from any other gift i've ever recieved. something that i'll remember. i convinced her that a new vid card moniter combo would be special, but now i feel i made the wrong choice.

you see i already got the vid card, it's as my sig says, a radeon 9800 pro 256mb...but when i bought it i bought it knowing that it was in the middle between mainstream and top of the line...and now i know that it will soon be "dated"

so i'm returning it to newegg and paying the 15% restocking fee myself (btw does ne one know if that's 15% of the price of restocking? or is it 15% of the price of the item? also is the refund store credit or a refund to her credit card? sorry but my RMA policy won't come up on the newegg site) and will probably get an x800 instead. i just haven't decided which. and i don't want to spend 100 dollars more of her money than i have to, but i still want something to blow away HL2 based games.

thanks for the input

I would imagine that the X800 Pro would be plenty.......but if you want the best and the fastest that ATI makes.....there is no substitute for the X800 XT Plat.

On the Newegg thing....it is a restocking fee based upon the current selling price and the money gets credited back you are credit card account....AFTER they recieve the item and inspect it. It takes about 2 weeks to do, and they will email you on the status as it changes.

On another note.......you may be able to call them and get them to wave the restocking fee if you explain to them that the card was a gift and that the wrong one was bought by mistake. Then they will send you an RMA email with special instructions at the bottom that you have to include in the box. IF you dont want to go without a vid card until you get the refund......I usually just go ahead and go through the process of buying one like usual.........then the credit card will be charged for the one you are sending back......and the one that you just bought....then when they recieve it and credit your credit card account.......you are where you wanted to be in the first place......and still have a vid card.

i have a 5600xt that can back me up while i wait

also i think i would be buying the xt from circuit city online, that way if i need to return it i can just return it to the local store...and i can skip some of the taxes that way

but thankyou for the advice on newegg...i will try calling them about the fee. it shouldn't be a problem tho...considering i have all of the packaging right here, and in perfect condition.

thanks again

ps...still don't know which card to buy

I personally want to buy the X800 XT just because I can now afford it. BUT what is driving me crazy is the date that it is due out. How many times can you push a date back!! First CompUSA had it set for 6/14, then 6/21, now 7/6....... I know it is only a video card but my current 9500 is on the edge of death and I am not sure how much longer it has....lol ugh I guess I have little patience. Personally I wish they would anounce these new cards like 2 weeks or so before the release them.. not 1 1/2 months....

The wait will be well worth it.
