My dad keeps telling me what I have is a pretty good computer and I should stop thinking about upgradeing and falling into somekind of consumer something or other. But when it comes to games like far cry and Joint Operations my computer really bites the dust.
Im planning on selling the following for 700 bucks
Amd 1800+
512 ddr 2700
Geforce 4 MX 440
along with the mobo
And then I will be looking into new parts. My friend is selling:
P4 2.4 ghz
512 3200 DDR
geforce 4 mx 440
new 15inch monitor
case and other nessesitys
For 900 bucks. Im just wondering if the 200 dollar differnce will get my a much higher performance. So in the end I will have:
P4 2.4 GHZ
512 3200 DDR
9600XT
17 inch monitor
New bigger case with extra fans, etc
Will the differnt speed of ram improve anything? Or how about the 1 ghz differnce? Please tell me what you think
It does not look as a good upgrade patch to me. A P4 2.4GHz isn't really that much faster in games and keeping the 9600XT will make performance in a game like FarCry stay basically the same.
With your system I would consider overclocking the CPU a little, or buying an inexpensive Barton 2500+ to put in there. Motherboard could possibly need a BIOS upgrade if it's too old, but the RAM is fast enough to handle the new CPU so installation should be easy. And then look at a graphics card upgrade in the near future. Perhaps by waiting a few months to see the prices of the newly released cards level and making the whole market range get a little lower. An R9800pro would make a good difference, if it would prove that a X800pro doesn't come down in price sufficciently enough.
I would also look for a adding a little to the RAM. An extra stick of 256MB could make a good difference since 512MB is a wee bit too little for todays performance hungry games. I run with 768MB myself and the difference over 512 is clearly noticeable. Switching out all of the old RAM and go for 1GB of PC3200 or faster would not be worth the cost right now.
i would get the p4 and mobo...higher fsb to feed the ram and video card etc...amd's have slow fsb except for the 64s. but for 900 thats practically a rip-off...because the vid card is useless..15" monitor is nothing. the ram is good though...what brand?
Im selling my computer right now the 1800+, but im keeping the 9600xt and throwing in an old geforce card. So Im not downgradging my video at all. Im basically just getting the following parts for 200 bucks
I would go for what mkk said anytime! For a relatively low cost you can get an inexpensive barton 2500, and even, if your motherboard is up to it, set it as an 3200+!
