Sorry for the 2 posts but i am wondering if you can give me some advice. Ok here is what I have.

Radeon 9700pro
1g of pc2100
amd xp2400 2.0
Abit Mobo NF7-S

I was thinkiing about buying the 9800xt 256. Could you give me your advice on if im gonna blow $400 would this be the ideal upgrade at this point. I only use the card for playing Wolfenstien ET which is an OpenGL. Or would I be better off getting some faster Ram or A better processor(unfortunately im not sure if I upgrade my socket A processor there is anything extremely better from amd. and then I would have to try a P4 with a new mobo.) Any suggestions or opinions is much appreciated.

The first thing I would upgrade is your ram, and then i might think about upgrading your video card, your processor is a nice one, and your video card isn't obsolite yet.

so that is my advice to you, and then you might stay within budget as well.
