no prblem - if the AGP card doesnt boot meaning that the flash went bad- then you pull it out put in the PCI card set your Motherboard settings to init display from PCI/AGP instead of AGP/PCI and then you shut down and put the AGP back in - only you leave the screen connected to the PCI card. that way the pc boots and see whats going on and then you just reflash with the original bios you backed up.

the success rates are very good for gigaCube and PowerColor 9800SE cards with 256 bit memory bus.
as for Np/Pro cards they are also good - even better then SE. as they usually come with faster memory chips.

you should all do your first flash using the same brand bios as your card - if you cant find one then use the gigacube - usually works on all cards.

as for memory chips other then hynix and Samsung. I have no idea haven't heard of any that worked as they are usually very slow memory chips.

hope this helps..if you have any more questions dont be shy - and ask away.

So, we use the Gigacube bios if we have a Sapphire 9800 Pro 128? Mine was origionally a Sapphire 9800 Non-Pro and I flashed it to Pro. Last night I tested it using the ATI Tool and it started getting artifacts at 425/390 with stock heatsink and no ramsinks, so I think I'm ok to flash it if I can use the Gigacube Bios. Ordered some ramsinks and a Arctic VGA cooler last night also.

Thanks.

This site hosts atiTool - really quick artifact tester, many, many bioses, and is a good resource for this topic:

Also the power colour differences are being discussed here:

Yes you can try the GigaCube 9800XT bios on your card to upgrade it.

BTW: I just installed FARCRY FULL retail game on my rig - and people I thought my card was good?! after playing for 2 hours - while on 1280X1024 with all settings at MAX I started to get artifacts in the shape of lines and shit from the scenery - so I switched over to windows used Rivatunner to underclock my card to 380/650MHz and the game came back to normal...then I played for a nother hour and the card started to artifact again - so again I downclocked it to 360/630Mhz and every thing was fine. I touched the card after 3 hours of playing and I was burning HOT and I have VGA Silencer installed along with MEM heat sinks and 3 80mm Fans on the card. an still didn't help.

I I suggthink I have to upgrade the cooling for the RAMDAC and volt controler as they were the ones that became very hot.

i suggest that any one planning on upgrading or flashing use FARCRY to test the card - since it uses DirectX9.0b to run, it sqeezes the life out of any card playing the game...if your card can hold it for 2-3 then your OK.

again Best of Luck
me972.

p.s. any one with ideas on what to use to cool RAMDAC and VOLT controler??

Does it help overclocking after you flash it into your 9800/9800pro card?

yes - very much so...my 9800SE could o/c to a max core speed of 410Mhz on original bios
but with the XT bios I can now O/C to stable XT rate 412 and the max rate has gone up to 460Mhz.
at 470MHz the card might hang on heavy greaphics or benchmarks. meaning I got 50Mhz out of the card because of the flash.
as for the memory went up from 680Mhz to 790Mhz stable.

the thing is that Xt bios has much more optimized routines and better timings so the card is stable at higher rates.

No its not.. last I've heard it doesnt work on AIW. there was a posting on the former known forum 3Dmaxx of some one that tried it and falied.

I think it disabled the AIM properties and turned the card to reguler XT or something or failed completly meaning the card didnt boot. in both cases not worth doing.

sorry man . if I come across a bios that works for you I'll post a link to it.

do you think you can send me a copy of your original AIW bios. maybe I can mod it for you.
if your willing to take the chance of flashing the card.
use flashrom.exe -s 0 backup.rom

works fine so far .. but my old 9800SE isn't able to run with 8 pipelines .. so the Aquamark3 performance raises only from 21,xxx to 22,xxx but better than nothing
Used the Powercolor.9800XT.128MB.Samsung.E-Die.bin (my PowerColor has Hynix - but works fine)

All right...I know one of you smart people can help me with this. What brand of memory does my card have? Here's what Sandra tells me about it.

Primary Display Driver (display)
Video Adapter
Model RADEON 9800 PRO
Chipset RADEON 9800 AGP (0x4E48)
RAMDAC Internal DAC(400MHz)
Video BIOS BK-ATI VER008.004.008.018
VGA Compatible No
Total Memory 256MB (255MB Video) (118MB AGP)
Texture Memory 373MB
Supports DIME Texturing Yes

AGP Capabilities
Version 3.00
Command Queue Length 256
Fast-Writes Enabled No
Isochronous Mode Enabled No
Addressing Enabled 32-bit
Data Transfer Modes Support 4x 8x
Current Data Transfer Rate 8x

Video BIOS
Date 03/04/04
Version 2304.848

I'm looking at flashing this bios to see what happens. I'm not really too sure how much of an increase I'll see in performance if I do but thought it would be entertaining at least. I'm currently running my clocks at 412/365. What do you guys think?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well it tells us nothing...to find out what memory chips you have - you need to take out the card from the PC and take a look at all the writings on one of the 8 memory chips (those black square chips around the core) if you dont see them than maybe they have heat sinks on them meaning that you wont be able to find out with out taking off one of them - I dont think its some thing worth doing.

in any case you have 256MB ram on you card meaning you cannot I repeat you CANNOT use the XT bios files we have posted here.
if you still want to have a go at flashing the card I can send you an XT bios for 256MB ram card. like yours.
drop me an email and I'll send you one.
