Monitor Problems concerning ATI drivers

hey, ive been gettin some really really messed up problems

till now i havent really needed to install the new cat's but ive stared to see problems in games so i have had to update but no matter which drivers i use and no matter what settings i have done i am always gettin the same problem my monitor will either turn itself to standby and i cant wake it up or it will go all crazy like its not locking the image correctly...the other problem which prolly has to be more the fact that its old and basicly crap is that i cant chge the refresh rate...well i can but i get the same problem where the image wont lock

i have used the driver cleanup tool and have even completly uninstalled and reinstalled windows

these problems will happen pretty much newhere but not in games which is k00 but not when i am surfing the net or sum1 else is using the pc

has ne1 ever had this problem and is there a way to fix it? or should i buy a new monitor and pray that it resolves this problem

btw the monitor is around 5 yrs old max res is 1024x769 and it is supposed to go as high as 100HZ but i can never get it past 60hz

system specs are:
AMD 2000XP
768 DDR pc2100
60gig drive
Radeon 9000 128DDR
windows XP serive pack 1

thanks for ne help in advance

When it says Max Res and Max Refresh it doesnt mean them as one thing

The max Refresh at like 640 is 100 and at 1024 is 60 is all

Now for the prob just dont try turning the refresh rate up too high if you want to use 1024. It could also be the monitor is having issues. Do you have the monitor drivers installed?

thnx for the input overdrive but if u can find the drivers for a 5 yr old plug and play monitor with no details or even a piece of crap on the back with a code then well er no =P plus the fact that the only thing that might have the drivers is a install disk for win 98 and since the last time i tried to use one of those 98 drivers for my joystick i dun feel like doing that again =P

yeh i understand that but it doesnt really help my situation since it is really ugly if u leave it in 640

could the problem be that sumwhere in the mess the drivers are sending the wrong code to the monitor and it aint liking it so it turns itself off to try and save itself?

this is one of the most annoyin and wierd problems i have ever had and what gets me is why does it only happen when i uppgrade from the stock defualt drivers to these ones?
