Don't do this!

I don't know if this will affect everyone but it gave me a bit of a headace. I was playing around with my system settings to see if I could improve performance with a 9800SE and one of the things I tried doing was to optmise the memory performance for system cache. When I rebooted the computer I got a series of writeback failures on the harddrive and couldn't get windowsxp to boot up, even in safe mode. Just before I was about to reinstall the OS I put an old Nvidia Geforce 2MX card into the system and windows was able to startup. Setting the memory optmisation back to programs allowed me to put the 9800SE back in again and start normally.

System Specs

you want to try turning of onboard vga in bios accidentally, try turning that on when you can't see what your doing.

but for yours that is a pain but pleased things were sorted out in the way you did.
i hate doing format & re-installs for tinkering with rig.

Always handy to keep an old GFX card lying about, would even have helped in your case.

....Or an Nvidia card on a Nforce motherboard using the NV IDE SW drivers There is a reason why people try using this on gaming rigs, unfortunately the system cache doesnt agree with ATI's drivers.
