9600 pro to replace 8500....any thoughts?

I need a little advice. My mother, being the great person that she is sending me $150 for my birthday. Beings that I just built a new system and my 8500 64mb retail is now the slowest link (I think) I decided after several hours of searching forum after forum that the ATI retail 9600 pro sounded the best and is with in my budget. So I ordered it thru Newegg, not the cheapest place but have read good things about them. Now I'm sitting here wondering how much performance I'm going to notice over the 8500. Not worried about benchies but more real life performance. I decided retail because I've had such good luck with the 8500, it over clocks at 290.25 core amd 290.25 memory with out hesitation. All thoughts welcome, oh and hurry up so I can call them before end of day if I have too..........lol.

The 9500pro and the 9600pro are both right about the same. The 9600pro benches higher. But definetly buy one of the two to replace the 8500. Or go to newegg.com and buy a 9500np and softmod it to a 9700np or 9700pro.

are you nuts? the 9500pro is much better than the 9600pro, they are not about the same, the 9500 is so way better, but it was expensive thats why ATI released the 9600, to start selling more well, I see u know a lot about this, I wonder what made u said the 9600 is better, dont tell me u trust on benchmarks that much

Well for the money Duffy you have made not a bad choice at all. For that amount of money you could have went 9500 Non Pro and modded it to a 9700 pro. Another option was the 9500 pro very solid card and performer. The last option was the 9600 pro with performance similiar to the 9500 pro but can overclock like crazy! Any of these options would have given you a very nice upgrade to your 8500. You will be very pleased.

The 9600pro is a nice card...you'll be v happy with it.

If you had bought the 9500 the mod may not have worked...its just down to luck sometimes.

What brand did you get?

Stu

True, I dunno what I was smoking. I just typed too fast. I know the 9500pro is better. Mistake on my behalf.

Thanks for all the replys.

Stu I ordered the retail box thru Newegg, I hope this is what I get. The only other one I will except would be the one from Saphire. The chance that the volt mod would not work is why I didn't go with the 9500, would be my luck to get one that wouldn't work and I plan on over clocking. The 9600 is said to be a very good over clocker and runs queit and cool!

I am going to miss my 8500

So how high were we able to overclock our RADEON 9600 PRO? How does a 547MHz core clock and 365MHz memory (730MHz effective) sound!
