5770 Performance Increase??

I had a quick question for all you DH Members out there, At the moment I have the PC that you can see over there <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

And I was wondering the kind of performance increase I could see from going from this X1950pro 512mb to a HD 5770, My native Resolution for my TV is
1366x768 which I run at 1360x768 of course, I've searched all the reviews of the card but most sites do the tests at 1600X1200 or above and that really doesn't give me much of a comparison to the performance I might see.

I'm not looking for a miracle from the 5770 I know the speed is between the 4850 and 4870 but my PSU only has one 6 pin plug and I can't afford a new PSU and a GPU so I figure 1 card now then a new PSU and another 5770 say at maybe...Christmas time or so

Any help would be greatly appreciated, And Thank You!

Also my E8500 is stock clocked since I'm ALMOST 100% sure my 1950pro is Bottlenecking it.......lol

The performance of the card is close to the 4870, and when DX11 games come out it will be nice to have it. For your res it is a bit low, but u still should see an increase in games that arnt so CPU limited. But its a huge increase over the X1950 and a good investment for the future. Also if i were us i would oc that CPU if u can.

Yeah I could OC the CPU but not like it'd matter atm my Vid Card is a giant bottleneck,
I have Vigor Monsoon III LT Which moves about 70 CFM of air with it's Dual 120mm fans. So I could probably get my CPU to 4.0+ easily

You can use Toms Hardware benchmarking tool, here is the link which makes a comparison between your X1950 Pro and a 4870.

As you can see, there is quite a noticeable performance increase, although no results for 1366x768, but it will give you a good estimate on how much faster it is.

Thanks for that link, is that a 512mb 4870 or 1g? Either way you're right the FPS increases are very noticeable, I would hope with the 5770 I could finally play Crysis on High.

Not Very High that'd be pushing it, but if I could finally play Crysis on High I would be happy, for a month or two =D

It will be huge improvement. if u get 11 fps at 1360 resolution in crysis, then using new 5770 u ll get around 40 fps + , ur cpu is not a problem , overclocking won't much increase fps count or anything , since crysis is gpu dependant more than cpu.

and other than that you don't have to upgrade anything. new cards r energy effiecient.

Plus new dx 11 cards hai have speciality, that they reduce cpu load by doing some cpu calculation themselves. so it not only reduces bottleneck, but improves computing.

there r some sites which have done reasonable good review of 5770 which shows ur display standard running crysis.

one of them is Radeon HD 5770 review

BTW so as it stands now, I get average 18-20fps on all High in Crysis so is it safe to say I could see 35+fps average with the 5770?

it's a bit slower than a hd4890 but given that only requires 1 6pin power cable and supports dx11 the hd5770 is the way to go. Mine should arrive tomorrow, i'm replacing my 4850 (which is bottlenecked by 512mb of gddr3).

Also it crossfires with performance close to the 5870

Interesting benchmarks there, but, how were they done? Same hardware across all the graphics cards and same graphics driver?

The 5770 in comparison to the X1950 pro will be night and day. Running @ 720p, the 5770 should be more than sufficient. Where you will really notice the difference is in your minimum FPS. The E8500 is still a top CPU for gaming.

Yeah my E8500 was part of my PC rebuild, as you can see the rebuild never got to far lol. But as most of you know moneys' tight all around for most people, eventually I will do a REAL new build and go either go I7 or I5 depending on the budget and throw another 5770 in there but that's months away watch for a thread rehash in October 2010 hehe

I can guarantee that you will see an increase in performance in games. And lets be honest. In a few months we are going to see DX11 games start rolling out and you will definitely like a 57xx series over your current since the 57xx series can go DX11. also don't fret your PSU should be fine. and just in case you happen to get one of those cards that wants dual 6-pins on the back they usually supply you with a molex to six-pin adapter for that purpose

Does anybody know whether 1280x1024 is more demanding on your GPU or 1360x768/1280x720 and what not, I'm only curious because reviews do sometimes include 1280x1024 and even though it does have a higher pixel count is it less demanding being 4:3?

The amount of pixels is the deciding factor when it comes to pixel fillrate(graphics memory performance). Depending on the game however, more or less geometrical data may appear in the picture at different aspect ratios. Anyway, neither 1280x1024 nor 1360x768 are particularly high resolutions for a modern card like a 5770. Don't worry about it.

If you do go with a 5770 I'd pick up MSI's Afterburner application, which lets you increase voltage and frequency. It -should- work with all models since it isn't programmed to look for a vendor ID in the BIOS. You should be able to match or beat a 4870 with some trial and error.

Yeah you can definitely at least get the same performance out of a 5770 as a 4870 if you are ambitious enough and you have a decent cooling solution.

Yeah sounds like a good plan, I need to either get a new case or replace some of my fans my front fan a 140mm Blue LED is on but not spinning..Must've burned out, all my fans are 4+ years old lol but cooling should be decent, 140mm in front 120mm in back and 250mm on side I'd love to get a high performance 250mm but they're 50 bucks lol I could just put that toward a new case

I hear mumblings of a potential 5830 release as well. It's not confirmed but there seems to be a lot of speculation about it. It would fill in the large gap in both price point and performance between the 5770 and 5850.

Warning about the HD5770 well at least on my computer the XFX HD5770 + a PCIe 1.0 slot = doesn't work. Again this was on my computer. I have another computer that it ran on fine using a PCIe 2.0 slot (Asrock 780g board), but my MSI K9A Platinum would not power that card. So you may need to replace your motherboard if it uses a PCIe 1.0 slot.
