AMD to show off DX11 hardware tomorrow

JUST BEFORE NOON Taipei time on Wendesday, ATI is going to to drop a bombshell on the graphics world, showing off working 40nm DX11 silicon. Nvidia has yet to tape out a DX11 part or put a 40nm chip on the market.
The cards that will be showed off are Evergreen/Cypress, what is commonly referred to as R870. That code name however is not used internally, so if you ever see any leaked specs or charts with R870 on them, they are flat out faked. There have been several of these bandied around, but they are all laughably off.
AMD promised that they would have DX11 cards out on the market by the Windows 7 launch, and barring a massive and as of yet undetected problem, it looks like they will make that with ease. In the mean time, at the company's Computex press conferences, Nvidia distinctly avoided any mention of DX11 or parts that run it..
Mid-day tomorrow, the winners and losers for the next 2-3 quarters will become very very clear.

we'll see.

i've never seen ati or nvidia release a mainstream card at launch of a new series...

it's usually always the top gun without considering a dual gpu solution..

I was however hoping for a dual core gpu solution though... i honestly think whomever creates the first true dual core GPU will rake in the hero cookies. Also likely would reduce manufacturering costs considerably with a dual gpu as if one core is toast... they can use it for single gpu cards.

OK, maybe I am having a cynical day... but I have a DX10.1 card (the 4870 X2) which is great... but the lack of games for it make that functionality a bit rubbish. Hawx is about the only decent 10.1 title.

So this hardware demo proves that the R800 series is real, great. But when will we see games that actually use the features and make it any more useful than a 4800?

that's really neat. but, doesn't DX need to be supported by BOTH hardware (gfx card) and software (OS)?

NVIDIA did. The series, 9000 series. The card, 9600GT.

The next card that was launched after that was the 9800GTX then the 9800GX2 then the 9800GT then other flavors of the 9600 simeltaneous with the 9500 cards.

Thats why it's tied with Windows 7 so that hardware and OS are compliant

i wonder if after w7 is launched if there will be a windows update to incorporate dx11 into vista seeing that both OSes are fairly similar to each other.

I don't consider that to be really true considering that they are all mostly baised on the same core..

it's kinda like saying the ATI radeon 9000/9100/9200/etc were the first mainstream cards when they are based on the 8500 series gpu....

Great news, AMD staying right on the leading edge for the upcoming Microsoft OS, which is probably going to be very popular.

Strong graphics hardware tied with the new "hardware tolerant" OS should mean that a very broad group of users will at least have the opportunity to experience top end graphics features, some for the first time in years.

i'm happy as hell that i've a fully compliant, WHQL certified windows 7 Display driver.. thank you.... It's be kinda ludicris and idiotic not to have something fully ready and waiting with windows 7 around the corner. Nothing irritates most people more then having something new and being unable to take advantage of it. Even more so when you have an OS that has even less support due to no available hardware....

Yeah you got it, we invested millions of R&D dollars to develop a DX11 architecture of GPU's in order to kiss M$ a.., we didnt actually do it to give gamers what they want...

Anyone remember Creative Labs sound cards when Vista came out? I'd have to go with Judas on this one. Stable drivers mean solid device and less headaches. Kissing ass? Nah, just got their shit together for this launch.

how bout nvidia period for about 6 months after vista launched.... that there was sour enough for nvidia users.... to bad nvidia had the balls to blame windows vista for being "far more to difficult to develope drivers on" when ati had a compliant working solution before and FULLY operation driver at launch... sure a few bumps along the way mind you.. but at least there was something to work with.

I'd still like to see a full length video of the entire ati presentation...
