Well i mean there is always a thing or two that is not working the way you want it to... A water cooled concept is surely a tricky thing, but i suppose the temps should become acceptable (50°C - 65°C for each card or even less) that way. ;o)

For those with the card, if you don't change anything on the card and you just set the fan at manual at say 92% or anything else very high, will the temps of the card still easily reach 90C+ ? What about noise?
I have an EVGA geforce 8800GTS and fan always at 96% and it isn't loud for me.

92- 100% on the X2 is really quite loud, that said, if noise doesnt bother you the temps drop massively. I saw 34c idle and high 50s load with the fan on full. (powercolor card).

Oh, very nice! So the previously mentioned temps were when the fans were left on auto? Same thing with my 8800gts, if left on auto it would reach high 80s easily.

Thank you, now I feel much better.

Yes, the specs are great and I used to love my x1800xt and before that the 7500m.

EDIT: I am actualy going to (95%) buy a new desktop system within this month, so it feels an even better addition to it.

92% fan speed is REALLY loud. I warn you now, it's unacceptable (note, 92% in expertool is alo 97% of the maximum real fan speed, so basically max)

i have found 55-60% a great setting for much better cooling with only slight noise....

sound recordings are hard to take, i mean the rest of a loud system can interfere and its difficult to ascertain the distance to take the recording from etc....

I agree though 90%+ is quite painful.

Re: How To: 4870X2 Temperature Control and Overclocking Profiles

I have a question about the guide here...

The guide mentioned how to make my 2D speed match my 3D speed by modifying the CoreClockTarget_0, MemoryClockTarget_0, and CoreVoltageTarget_0 values. I only have a Want_0 and Want_1 (no Want_2). The Want_0 obviously is my 2D speed, so that is what I'll need to change.

The question though. Is I also have a CoreClockTarget_1, MemoryClockTarget_1, and CoreVoltageTraget_1. Is this for the second GPU, and if so, I assume I'll need to update the Want_0 values here as well, right?

I ahve another question tho.. i think I read soemwhere that the card drops down to 2d settings when in windows enviroment. Is it possible to have it set to the 3d settings all the time??

Thank you for the sound recording.

How close to the card was the mic? Side?

If it was less than half a meter then it sounds barely, ok to me. If it was a meter or so away from the card, then it is very loud.

I will have my system hopefuly in the next few days so I will know first handed how bad it is.

Re: How To: 4870X2 Temperature Control and Overclocking Profiles

The fan provides saficient cooling as it is, if you set the fan speed high enough. I had the card reach 49C just by setting the speed at 50%.
100% and it went down to 42C after 2 min and it is LOUD. You guys were not kidding. It's like a hoover. The amount of noise is too much unless you are wearing headphones with loud music/effects. I have never heard a fan that is this loud (PC) before today. At least there is no high pitch noise, but still...wow.
I use expert tool and I don't understand why it has two options for speed setting (2D and 3D) when it doesn't allow me to have them set at different speeds. Any idea if I set it at 50% and there is a demand for higher speed if it will automaticaly increase it although it is set at fixed speed?

Re: How To: 4870X2 Temperature Control and Overclocking Profiles

I did my fan setting with a BIOS edit, but the numbers can help other people!

I set my idle speed to 37% which is about 2330 RPM according to Everest...
100% is about 5000 RPM, if I remember right...

I set the "desired" temperature to 88 degrees C, and in 3DMark Vantage, my temp never goes above 86 degrees...
Fan speed never seems to break 3700 - 3800 RPM, which is surprisingly tolerable during gaming...

Which is about 63%... Using the CCC settings... Getting the Everest RPM numbers to match what keeps me under 88 degrees...

So set a gaming profile of 65% in the CCC (the newest 8.10 drivers have fan control built in)

I can't make the fan control of 8.10 work...pff. ok done it by also ticking the enable overdrive and not just the fan control.

Yep... I forgot to do the same thing back when I was using the XML trick, lol.

Given the temps older cards used to run at, I don't think there's much of an issue up until 90C, thats when it gets a bit hot, so 95/96 is a bit far. All they need do is get the load temp down to 85 though and that would be acceptable in my book as it's the same temp normal graphics cards run at.

I couldn't help but notice that 50% is 3300rpm and 100% is 4600rpm though - hardly double... Dynamic fan speed uses 1250rpm idle and 2000-2400rpm load.
CCC offers a bit more in terms of customization of the fan speed.

But this is what I've noticed.
20% = 1000 RPM
25% = 1171 RPM
28% = 1420 RPM
39% = 2500 RPM
50% = 3286 RPM
66% = 4000 RPM
75% = 4265 RPM
100% = 4840 RPM

Meh. I guess our fans aren't up to par? :/

Well from my experience, 1 is the 1st GPU, and 0 is the second GPU. Unless it is just based on which port your monitor is plugged into. My monitor is plugged into the bottom port, closest to the PCI-E bus.
For me, when I changed just CoreClockTarget_1 and then checked the 2nd gpu, it didn't seem to change, so I changed 0's to the same values, and then both GPU's have the same value now.

I've also noticed that fanspeed doesn't do anything in 0's setting, probably because when you select the second gpu, you can't chose any settings with the fan.

Did any of that make any sense at all? If not, I can try to clarify a bit more with pictures and whatnot.

Re: How To: 4870X2 Temperature Control and Overclocking Profiles

Actually after some advice from a poster here I gave Rivatuner a try and am pretty happy with it. Using the dynamic option discussed in the guide from HardForum I'm running the fan at 36% speed default for 2d, which gives me right between 49-51 degree GPU temp, and then it auto adjusts up as needed.

Anyway in case anyone is interested in checking it out here are some links:

Get Rivatuner HERE

Guide specifically for 4870x2 HERE

Hope it helps

I acquired a couple of Asus Radeon 4870X2 Tri-Fan graphics cards a few weeks ago.

At the moment I have one 4870X2 card installed. Everything is set at default stock out-of-the-box settings and I'm running CAT 9.7 drivers. Idle temps are 51° C with the fan at 50%. Load temps are 79-81° C and the fan monitor in CCC shows 100% at times. Occasionally I'll see an 84° C.

Is the triple fan cooling solution by Asus a good one? Or should I go to watercooling? I was (as were many after reading this thread) shocked to see above 79° C. I hear watercooling gets you into the low 30°'s C.
