ATI x1650 (AGP problems!!)
I posted here, but I figured now since its a graphics card problem that the post should belong in here. GPU confusion...
Anyway, to sum it up. I am getting the same problems that this guy is getting --> low frames AGP x1650PRO
These are my computer spec's (not great but meh)
Cpu is a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (2.1GHz)
Ram - 1.5gigs
Motherboard specs - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...426594&lang=en
500W PSU
I originally had a Nvidia Geforce 6200 and I upgraded to this Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H165GTQT512GDDAN-R Radeon X1650GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 8X IceQ Turbo Video Card - Retail .
It's a pretty huge upgrade, yet my FPS did NOT increase WHATSOEVER. The main game that I play is Counter Strike Source, not a very graphics demanding game. I used to get anywhere from 5-30 fps on CSS CAL maps with my 6200, and now with this new card installed I get the SAME FPS.
I tried the ATI drivers with the ATI hotfix, that didn't help either. So I installed the omega drivers and my FPS still has not increased at all.
I found this thread
low frames AGP x1650PRO
and I quote

Have you tried manually updating the drivers from the Device Manager?
|
How exactly am I supposed to do this? When you are going to install a new driver aren't you supposed to delete all your old drivers?
I deleted all my ATI drivers and I was going to revert to the 6.5 version like he did, but I get these errors.

Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup.
|
Anyway back to my original question on how you are supposed to manually update... since you are supposed to delete everything, when i go into my device manager, I don't have any Display drivers because of course, everyone says to delete them!!
It doesn't make any sense

First of all, there is NO REAL NEED to delete previous ATI drivers in order to do an update of the video drivers. I know there are some people who will say differently, BUT, I've owned so many ATI cards over the last dozen and a half years I think I can say I know what I'm talking about. Even the ATI gurus say it's not necessary! AND, in fact, Omegadriver specifically states it's not necessary when installing HIS tweaked drivers. The only REAL necessity is to make sure when installing the drivers that you answer YES if you get a prompt to OVERWRITE any file.
The ATI drivers are made so that they will automatically UPDATE any of the files previously installed and are OLDER than the files being installed.
So, if you've already uninstalled everything, simply remove the Video card from the Device Manager, restart Windows and let Windows redetect the card and install the native drivers for it. If prompted to reboot, do so. Then, after rebooting, simply install the drivers of your choice and follow the prompts to the next reboot.
Good luck!

Hi there!
I think that the issue in here might be your CPU and it's speed. It just can't feed enough data the GPU so that you would get higher fps on games.

I still cannot update the drivers. I have the drivers from the disc installed but everytime I try to install an older driver, I get that INF error.
My computer is just as bad as that other guys that I linked to, yet his FPS destroys mine. I read in some other people's threads that "manually" installing these older drivers fixed the install errors. How exactly do I do that?

Yes, you can do a manual driver installation by going into Device Manager, highlight/select the graphics card, choose to Update the driver and then do not let it automatically install drivers. Rather, manually browse to where the 6.11s and/or 6.5s are extracted and choose that driver to install.
Good luck!
|
Nevermind I found out how to manually install... but it does not allow me to choose the drivers I want to install.

Are you using XP or Vista? And, with either one, 32 or 64 bit?
|
I'm using XP. I have windows service pack 2 installed.
and I cannot do a complete reboot of windows and whatnot, my computer is like 4-5 years old and I have moved dozens of times within that time frame. All the original stuff that came with the computer are long gone.

To manually update the drivers click My Computer with 2nd mouse button and select manage. There goto device manager where you should see your graphics adapter as unknown device or standard VGA device. Open the device properties. Goto driver tab and click update driver. Don't let windows to search for driver. Select it manually. Then you get a list of the drivers that are installed don't select any of those. Click have a disk. Browse to the folder where the drivers .inf files are. That is usually in (C:\ATI\SUPPORT\*driver version*\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\) folder. Then select the driver and finish the installation and reboot.

Where would I check this?
I looked under my Processor on the Device manager, looked at Driver details and it says the Driver date is 4/1/2004. Is that an old version?

If you had any official AMD/ATI drivers installed or tried to install there should be folder in C:\ named ATI in that folder is sub folder that has the driver version on it's name.
Anyway you should give a try to the newest Catalyst drivers
[EDIT] Get them here : Drivers & Software

I tried the newest catalyst drivers along with the update, my fps was still anywhere from 5-30 depending on the map. I want to use an older version because I've read from a bunch of other x1650 users that their FPS was greatly increased when they used an old version. Like in my original link, that guy updated his to a 6.5 and his FPS was 80-100 in CSS.
And under the ATI/support folder there are 2 folders...
6-5_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_32464
6-10_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_36790
edit: just a question as well... Why is Nvidia 99x easier to install and 99x more user friendly then ATI? !!

Ok, those are some old drivers indeed. BTW did the guy have CPU that is better than yours? Since I think that your CPU is the bottleneck that prevents you to get higher fps.
for your question about the way drivers are installed the basic way that drivers are installed in Windows is the same for all drivers some companies have different installing interfaces for the end user. AMD is doing it their own way.
