TV resolution

Hello,
I have an HD2600 XT i my laptop which has a 1680 x 1050 resolution. I sometimes use my Sony HD TV as an external monitor. It uses the old 4:3 aspect ratio but is HD. I tried all the different resolution settings in CCC 7.11 to try to use the entire screen of the Sony TV but I can't get it to. It just uses the wide aspect ratio and leave black bars at top and bottom of the screen. Any ideas on how to use the full screen?

When you are using the TV you need to use a 4:3 resolution like 1024x768, 1280x960, or 1600x1200. Not sure which one of those your TV will 'like', but one of those should work.

I tried those resolutions and still get the black bars on the top and bottom. I also tried messing with the different scaling options but no luck. The only one that worked was 720X480 but it made the windows so large they were off the screen.
Any more ideas?

The text is very blurry and hard to read on the HDTV Tube TV and the 4:3 aspect ratio is old for me. If I get a widescreen LCD HDTV will I have better luck using all the screen real estate instead of having black bars on the top and bottom? Will the text be just as sharp as on my laptops 1680 x 1050 LCD?

What interface is the TV connecting to the PC with?

If its SVideo or composite then the signal is going to be 1024x768 (or at least should be and has been in my experience).

If you get a new TV you'll want one with a DVI port so you can hook it up like you would a monitor (either that or component connectors, assuming your laptop can output a component signal).

It's connected via HDMI. That's just as good as DVI correct?
