HD 2600 XT Audio stopped working.
I just installed a new ATI HD 2600 XT with the latest Catalyst Suite (7.12) and now my sound card doesn't work anymore. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate on an HP Media Centre PC. I have an HP f2105 LCD monitor that doesn't support HDMI audio. I suspect the 2600 XT is trying to take over the audio and has somehow disabled my sound card. When I open the Sound settings in Control panel it only shows one audio device "High Definition Audio (HDMI)"
Does anyone know how to resolve this? Perhaps I need to disable the HDMI audio on my HD 2600 somehow? The manual they shipped on the CD is for the wrong video card too and I can't seem to find the manual on the AMD site. |

the the last audio driver installed becomes default (ati card includes hdmi sound),
go into the control panel under sounds and audio devices and select the proper audio device for playback and you'll be fixed fast

The strange thing is that only one audio device appears in Control Panel under Sounds. It only shows "Digital Output Device (HDMI) High Definition Audio device"
It's almost as though the on-board sound card no longer exists. |

So, thanks to Judas! here, this is what fixed my problem: 1. Open the Control Panel and select Classic View. 2. Now double click on and open the Sounds. 3. If you see this following option, select it: Show Hidden Devices. 4. Hopefully, you now will see the actual audio card listed and can select it. If not....please let us know. Good luck!!

gdyck...
I have a very similar system to yours (HP media center a6057c with VISTA) and had an identical problem when I installed my new 2600XT card yesterday. No sound... My (our?) problem is the on-board sound chip and the BIOS.. The default setting in the BIOS for the sound chip is "AUTO" which apparently disables it if any other sound chip is installed. Much like you, I didn't expect the 2600XT video card to have a sound chip, so I didn't look at that setting.. The solution is to set the Sound chip setting it to "ENABLED" in the BIOS, i.e. to force it on. Now when you start up the system, your Realtek speakers will be visible in the Sound Control Panel.. Lots of on-line forums have noted the HDMI digital sound driver seems to be defaulted wrongly by the Catylst software... That's easy to fix and was described by other responders in this thread. Before I discovered the BIOS issues, I did re-install the Realtek sound drivers via the HP Recovery Manager, but I don't think this was necessary. Regards eb |

I went into the BIOS and changed the on-board sound card setting to "Enabled" instead of "Auto" and then set the default Sound device to "Speakers" in Control panel and that did the trick!
Thanks for everyone's help. Greg. |
