These 3 cards, which are faster( PCI )
Newegg.com - VisionTek VTKX1300256PCI Radeon X1300 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Video Card - Retail
Newegg.com - EVGA 256-P1-N399-LX GeForce 6200 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Video Card - Retail Newegg.com - BFG Tech BFGR62256OCP GeForce 6200 256MB DDR PCI Video Card - Retail Thinking about trading in my 5500 256mb pci card, for one of those. Should i really go with the X1300 or the 6200? btw, #1 Dont tell me i need to upgrade #2 I cant use the X1550, too much PSU is required. Thanks.

I am using windows98se with PCI slots, and me and my wife already have xp, however that computer is for business only. And i am buying a super XP computer in a few months, with AGP or PCI-E slots and i will make sure to get a powerful card for that desktop computer.
However, PCI is very good in my opinion. I was just thinking about replacing my 5500 card for the 6200 or X1300. I guess i will see which one i can find the cheaper, when i go out this weekend. Btw, the 6200 has a 64bit Bus, while the X1300 has a 128bus, does it matter? |

X1300 is good, go with it,
Vista is what i recommend over XP, i hated XP and now i love vista. for your next build, are you planning to buy or build? if you are going to build, you can always stop by and give us a price range so we can put together a list of components to work on.

Build, not really. I just plan to buy a secondary computer and lets say i do buy vista over XP, can you play every XP game ever on Vista without any problems?
Also about the 6200 and X1300, when i go out this weekend or early next week for shopping, which ever card is the cheapest, i will buy it. Thanks. |

be aware..
the latest version that supports windows 98se is i beleive catalyst 6.2's So you'll HAVE to manually check to see what that version of catalyst supports for hardware...... I think a x1300 would work fine in the 6.2's... but i can't guarantee it.. actually anything windows 98 or 9x i can't support or guarantee anything at this point.... simply no longer on the map at all... As for nvidia, you'll have to check with them as well... last thing you'll want to end up doing is buying a card that you can't run on 98

building a computer is always better, you are never at the mercy of any company if it breaks and fixing a system yourself is usually a breeze. also do research on what driver you'll need since that 9 year old OS is not an easy thing to work with

I don't think you're going to see much performance increase what-so-ever for the money. I'm not going to say "upgrade" but what I will point out is this:
PCI bus has a shared 133 MB/sec on it. That means everything shares that. A video card will eat through that in no time flat, so its going to fight with your disk controller, sound card etc. for that bandwidth. Being so limited I don't see why going to a more powerful GPU will make any difference, the choke point is still the bus. You gain additional supported features yes but is it really worth the cash just for that? Also when you build your super computer its going to be PCI-e. AGP doesn't come on most (if not all) newer motherboards. It might even be PCI-e 2.0 if you go with AMD's Spider platform ![]() Now... in theory the X1300 is the fastest but again...don't think you'll see any performance increase. |

Hey, H3X4D3C1M4L, you are using a Geforce 5200, i have a Geforce 5500. What driver do you use?
I am using a 56.56., works wonderful. Btw, Judas, i thought you could use any ati driver for the X1300. The 6.2 is the last win9x driver and that should work, even tho it didnt work too well on my radeon 7000. But also keep in mind, VisionTek has drivers on thier website for win9x, so i think i am safe. |

As it happens I think I'm using the exact same revision If not its within the 56.xx series, I'm too lazy to check right now (as I am on my laptop and that machine is upstairs). But I just got my old 9800 AiW working and since that card is AGP and is the only AGP card I've found to work on that system, its getting swapped in once I figure out more cooling for that case

Oh. Btw, i sent a email to visiontek asking them will the X1300 work in windows98se/win9x, so i hope they can let me know. But i think someone on another forum said there is no driver for that card, even the 6.2 wouldn't work.
Well, if i cant get the X1300, i will just buy the 6200. So right now i am looking at 3 cards to buy soon. Btw, the 5500 is pretty good, i also have a evga 5200 FX 128MB card in my living room. I planned to get rid of it soon, the only difference between the 5200 and the 5500 from which i can see, is the FX5500 is a bit faster. Peace |

Well bad news, just got this email:
I'm sorry but the x1300 is not supported under Windows 98SE. OnlyWindows 2000, XP, and Vista Well for this computer(windows98se) i think the last greatest card for windows98se/PCI slots is the Geforce 6200. So i guess i will go for that, unless i find that 8500GT card or 7300 card. Now most likely i will buy the EVGA 6200 256MB PCI card. The folks at EVGA told me that this card just came out 2-3 months ago and its more powerful then the 5500 despite the obvious 64memory bus. One question Whats the difference between the BFG and the EVGA 6200 card? Now some information about the BFG 6200 from wikipedia BFG Technologies introduced a unique PCI version of the GeForce 6200 in both its main and 3D Fuzion lines. Until the release of the ATI X1300 PCI, these were the only two DirectX 9 PCI cards not based on the previous generation GeForce FX family or the discontinued Volari V3XT chip from XGI Technology. Currently the 256 MB Geforce 6200 PCI [4] is one of the most powerful cards for the PCI interface, making it popular among gamers without a PCI Express or AGP motherboard. Since Windows Vista requires DirectX 9 for its signature Windows Aero interface, the GeForce 6200 PCI cards are likely to be a popular choice with users that lack AGP or PCIe slots, but want to upgrade their video for Vista.
So what do you think, should i buy the EVGA or BFG or 3Dfuzion, they all sound pretty much the same, i think the EVGA is faster tho, because of what it said on the website: EVGA's video cards feature factory-overclocked GPU and memory, which enhances performance. |

The 7-series Nvidia does not have 98 drivers, so don't bother looking for a 7300 or higher, as there's no 98 support for those either.
The BFG is $69.99, has 350MHz core / 410MHz DDR The EVGA is $49.99, has 300MHz core / 533MHZ (effective) DDR2 While it looks as if EVGA fas faster memory, 533 (effective) sounds like they are fudging the figures.

Sounds pretty good, guess i will buy the 6200 this weekend
I'm doing some serious testing with the card, just to make sure its more powerful then the 5500 tho and if everything seems ok, i will just get rid of the 5500. The 6200 card is the last card which will work on my computer , and that would be my final upgrade on this computer. And in about 2-3 months i will buy a super XP or vista computer for those new and newer games. Peace |
