Problem with Radeon 7500!
When I try to play a certain game I get an error :"A critical error has occurred while initializing DirectDraw." Also, the video test for the game fails, saying that there are no video modes.
When I run dxdiag, it says that I am using the generic video driver; it does not detect my video card. In the device manager, however, it detects a Radeon 7500. ![]() How do I get it so that my video card is detected and DirectDraw acceleration is enabled? |

I think the problem is, is that you are actally using the default Windows driver and Direct3D isn't supported on it or in some way conflicts with it.
Have you tried installing a newer driver or a newer DirectX? |

My current drivers are Radeon Omega Drivers v3.8.252. These are the latest drivers that I am aware of that are compatible with the Radeon 7500. As to DirectX, when I try to download DirectX 10, it says that it is unnecessary as I have the latest version.
VgaSave, the generic one provided by the OS, is currently my default adapter, and, DirectDraw acceleration does not function with it. Apparently, the video card that I have installed refuses to work for some reason. If I could just get it to detect the Radeon 7500 and use it as the adapter, I think I'd be set...I just don't know how to do that, lol. |

Have you installed the drivers? For Omega Drivers, the first installation extracts the files to install the driver to your hard drive, then you have to run the actual driver installation after that.

Yes, I believe I've fully installed it; It shows up in my programs with the options to
"Re"install, so I guess so. It also shows up in my device manager in parentheses next to Radeon 7500 under display adapters. My computer isn't using the Radeon as the adapter though, it's using the standard VgaSave, which doesn't allow the accelerations I need to play my game. I don't know how to get it to detect and use the Radeon...

Ah. Uh.. do you have integrated graphics? Or any "Unknown Device"s in Device Manager? If so disable integrated graphics..
Only other thing I can think of is just try uninstall the drivers, then run Driver Cleaner if you have it, then try installing again.. :/ |

Click on Update Drivers. Don't let it do it for you. Select, the option to make your own choice. Then, use the "Have Disk...." option and point to where the Omegadrivers were extracted onto the HD. This is a manual update of the drivers. If you run into problems here, let us know. Good luck!

The manual installation of the drivers was successful, but video test still fails. Maybe the drivers I downloaded weren't the latest ones? DirectX features are still unavailable, and the DXDiagnostics Tool tells me that the system is using the generic video driver...

At this point, try updating DirectX with the latest release from Microsoft for November, 2007.
Good luck!

The newest DX wouldn't solve anything I don't think... the only thing that it would do is stop a newer driver from complaining about the required DX 9 version etc. The latest drivers from ATI won't work either because they removed 7500 support (same with Omega's).
I think, what should be tried is installing a driver like 3.12 or 4.2 or something around there, and see how that works. I know newer drivers won't install for that 7500 so maybe what happened is the newer drivers were downloaded and just didn't install after going through the extraction and all. |
