ATI Card question about audio.
I've been seeing about piecing together a new gaming rig. I see the new HD2900 ATI card is the best. I'm wondering though.. It says it has HDMI with 5.1 surround sound audio.
What exactly does that mean? It's just a built in sound decoder if your going to use HDMI for a TV?
Will I still want to get a high end creative sound card for gaming?

I haven't had my hands on a HD2900 to figure out how this thing works....
but my understanding was that it allowed PASSTHROUGH spdif digital connections sound to be moved through it... AKA, playing a DVD in the computer, the spdif connection would need to be selected...

Oooh, this way you don't need a soundcard with audio out... Ok that makes sense. Thanks Judas.

The 5.1 is sent through the DVI ports anyway, they include an adapter that changes DVI-D to HDMI

Source: [H] Enthusiast - Sapphire Radeon HD 2900 XT CrossFire
The black adapter seen at the bottom left.
As far as I know, the sound is not a replacement for a soundcard, but only to allow for HDMI use on an HDTV as the HD2900 boasts HD Gaming so 720p,1080i,1080p etc

Any HDTV i've connected using that DVI to HDMI connector (on a HD2400 and 2600 models) has produced horrible quality images.... it's as bad as trying to use SVideo.... fuzy as hell... hard on the eyes.... and only the HD standard resolutions are available... VGA is far superior yet when connecting a computer to a HDTV...

I beg to differ - I have a Samsung LE23R88BDX HDTV @1360x768 60Hz using DVI-HDMI and the picture is super-sharp.
I'm getting 1-1 pixel mapping and all is good (I loose only 3 rows of pixels each side of the screen - not noticable).
I have an X700 AGP graphics card and this does the job nicely.
I haven't tried VGA from my computer, but with my picture so sharp using HDMI, I won't bother.
I had to install the Original Catalyst 7.8 drivers though - the latest Omegas didn't support 1360x768 on my TV so I was forced to use 1280x768 stretched for a day or so (wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy!)
Back to the original topic, yeah, the 5.1 audio is DEFINATLEY a passthrough - so you still need that Creative sound card!!!

I wasn't stating that the VGA standard itself is superior... i was stating that a number of the HDTV's i've hooked up, EVER HDMI-HDMI, DVI to HDMI connection to the TV has always resulted in a mess where VGA has produced the best.
And ironically, the Samsung model you mentioned, athough a difference size (similare components and everything) was one of the HDTVs i had on hand...

No problems with my HD2900 hooked up to my Samsung HDTV 40" LCD - LNT4061F
Looks just as good as my PS3 and X360 Elite on my HDMI inputs. And about even with my OPPO 981HD... VGA doesnt hold a candle to any of them though

That's because VGA is analog and most HDTV's are completely digital, thus adding in an analog transmission will make things inherently worse

I'm still confused over this..
just installed the latest 7.9's on an HD2600XT ... using the DVI-HDMI adapter that came with it, plugged in another HDMI compliant NEW 720p LCD samsung HDTV, and yet again, i'm presented with 1280x720 resolution that looks like absalutely CRAP, tried a DVI to HDMI cable as well, same BS.....
I can't seem to fix this for any HDTV i've setup... wtf am i doing wrong here...
All i should have to do is plug in the TV with the game, and select the HDMI port, and then set the resolution to maximum available for it.... right? Tried using a 1080i resolution as well, which made things worse in terms of actually being able to see anything at all.
Even tried this, also have the componenet out cable, tried it, hooked up the TV... although it's a bit BETTER then the HDMI/DVI connections, it's still a far cry from the quality of the VGA cable...
Using a DVI-VGA adapter with a 6 foot VGA cable directly connected to the HDTV.... poof, 1360x768 and clear as a bell.
Someone explain this to me.....

How many HDMI ports do you have on the TV? For DVI, the Samsungs use the 2nd HDMI port.
Sounds strange as when I installed my Catalyst 7.8 drivers, Catalyst Control Center detected my HDTV as a 'Samsung', and switched to 1360x768 @ 60Hz automatically.
Let us know how you get along,

Tried all 3 HDMI ports..
it only recognizes it as a HDTV HDMI connection.. use VGA.. and it'll pull all the DCC stuff
