Crossfire question.
I have a AT8 32X and it finally came to me that I have two X1800 XT's available to fill the slots.
One is a ASUS and the other is a Sapphire, both are 512, neither is a "Crossfire Mastercard"
I seem to recall that you can now do a software version of Crossfire with later drivers and using ATI Tray Tools or CCC, for some cards.
Does that apply to the X1800 XT's ?
Any how to's? Like which card you would use to output to the monitor.
Any help is better than what I know.

You should be able to run them in software crossfire. As far as im aware the card in the slot nearest the CPU would be the master one.

I believe that refers to them getting rid of the dongle, and going to bridge crossfire via ports on the card from inside. Then you can use CF without master/slave...but for older R580 CF I think you still need master/slave cards and the dongle as there is no onboard bridge for CF

Actually, there is one that is considered software Crossfire. The idea is that it uses the PCIE bus to do the communication between the 2 cards, and doesn't require any sort of dongle... internal or external. However, of the X18xx and X19xx series cards, only the X1900GT, and the X1800 GTO are capable of software Crossfire.
To see the rundown of what's what, you can look at the chart HERE. Only problem is that the chart is a bit old, so at the moment I can't say 100% that you can't run the X1800XT cards in software Crossfire mode. I guess it's really just a matter of hooking them both up, and taking a look at the Catalyst Control Center. It will tell you whether or not you can turn Crossfire on.

Okay that's what I'll do this weekend, put my new 850 PSU and both X1800 XT's in. load Vista 64, and see what shakes out.
I can always use an extra card here and there

I have been working on five different computers this weekend, but I believe two and a half are good to go now. I have ASUS A8N-E in the trouble shooting mode that needs to "Borrow" the peripherals of my Crossfire Machine and then back to work on it. I do have both cards in there, the ASUS X1800 XT dwarfs the Sapphire. I have to install the 850 Antec , a Hard drive, and Vista Home Premium 64, but then will come the reckoning. I will post back one way or the other.

Okay I believe the question was ... can you put a couple of straight X1800 XT 512 cards (Different makes) in a crossfire board using the latest and greatest drivers
and the answer is.... NO
The ASUS is way bigger Physically than the Sapphire. the machine would get the flash screen, but hang on the next page of the post sequence.
When trying to enter Bios it would say it was going to setup, but would never get there. I'll do something Later... with crossfire
