Installed ati1600 pro windows start problems

Hi all,
I am new here and liked some of the threads I was reading and was inquiring if some computer gurues could answer a question????

I built a SOYO dragon computer at the beginning of this year with the following:

SOYO Case
SOYO M/B -SY-P4VTE
2 gigs of Micron pc3200 memory
2 seagate barracuda 80 gig HD's at RAID 0
1 40 gig Maxtor Hard drive as a slave
sound card is a Soundblaster X-Fi X-treme music card
I had a NVIDIA 6200 512mb graphics card that caused some problems with start ups
Windows XP Pro with SP2 (all up to date)

I recently upgraded the PSU from a 350 watt to a Ultra Xtreme 500 watt and replaced the graphics card with an ATI 1600 PRO 512 mb.

Now the problem - I start windows XP and it gets to the Windows Splash screen and then it blinks a few times then goes black...it sounds like the computer is booting up but nothing happens....I hit the restart and then it fires up fine. I have been banging my head on the keyboard now for a few days trying to get this resolved.

I have updated the AGP driver, the RAID drivers the IDE driver, I downloaded the newest framework etc. etc. etc. My computer is up to date with all the latest drivers.

I have the latest cataylst drivers from ATI after uninstalling the ones that came with the disk as I read a while back that the OEM disk driver was causing problems.

Still nothing - computer starts and goes to black screen and I have to hit the reset button. Now the funny part is this happens after the computer has sat for the night after I shut it off. After I hit reset the computer fires up fine I can restart it and it will start without any problems. Like I said this is only happens after I shut it off for a few hours or for the night and try to start it the next day or later that day.

Any help would be appreciated. And No I have not tried the OMEGA drivers but have looked at them with interest. And Yes I have CRAP Cleaner it's a GREAT Program!!!....

As an update - tried several different drivers and to no avail. I found that windows actually loads, I can hear the startup sounds, but the screen stays black until I hit the reset and then it works fine.

Any thoughts would be appreciative-I have read many other forums and tried everything from reseating the card to reseating the memory sticks...This is driving me nuts - I loved my old ATI 9600 never had a problem and still don't as I installed it on my old computer but this ati 1600 pro is about to drive me nuts!!!!

System Specs

Greetings and welcome to DriverHeaven!

I apologize that your initial post was ignored. I don't know why unless it just got bumped quickly from the top of the list.

I'm not personally familiar with the X1600 Series. However, if I understand the specs, I believe it had Dual DVI connectors. If so, have you tried connecting to the opposite connector to see if it's perhaps defaulting to the other connection? The fact that it's getting to the Windows Logo [Loading] screen prior to dropping the signal yet still loads Windows indicates that it may be defaulting to the other one.

Keep us posted.

I did try the other slot to no avail. I guess I have to break down and contact ATI - yuck - on hold for an hour, then someone to suggest everything I have all ready done and then have them say - I don't know LOL Just kidding I guess its tech time for ATI thanks though!!!!

did you say you had a 6200 that also caused problems?

Big Grin

Yes the 6200 causes a different kind of problem that actually gave a BSOD and showed an error of nv_4 display error. It would then restart and work fine. I had bought the 6200 used and thought maybe that was the problem as someone got rid of a problem card, but it seems to run good in my other computer. Therefore - yes I agree this may be a MOBO or Windows Application that may be at fault here-Unfortunately!!!!! Would RAID 0 have anything to do with this??? Or possibly updating the BIOS for the Mobo?? I have downloaded the Latest BIOS but read the warning that flashing can cause perm problems to Mobo and have yet to attempt it without a backup plan of replacing the Mobo if I have too.

Thanks for the replies - if worst comes to worst I cna do what I was doing and hit the reset button at startup LOL - it works fine after that!!!!
