help with overclocking
so, i overclokced my x800xt to 550/570.
In some games it doesnt give artifacts, in some games it does.
in ATT it doesnt show any artifacts, it doesnt heat up very much... not over 70.. so what is wrong...
why does it give artifacts in some games... does it run too hot in those games then? (havent checked, should do next time)
but its strange, in titan quest (pretty demanding right? for my system anyway) i dont get artifacts, in dark crusade i do get them... although my thought is that titan quest is more demanding then dawn of war!?
anyway... post ur thoughts please

Some games just don't like overclocking and some do.
Guild Wars artifacts at 521/565 for me but I'm fine playing CS: S at 540/600

What kind of artifacts are you experiencing in Dawn of War?

It doesn't matter if a game is demanding or not, but the way it uses the card. Some strain the RAM more, some strain the core pipelines more.
If it artifacts in some games and not in others, it is most likely that it also artifacts in those games you think it does not, but you just cannot see it. Depending on the game engine and framerate, your eye may not be enough to catch the distortion.
I'd back the clocks down to where everything works stable if I were you. The video card RAM chips and pipelines are usually sensible to damage.

Well since they're the hottest components and the direct victims of overclocking it makes sense
I think this is just a case of the game being sensitive that's all. Like I say, some games like it and some don't.

These type of artifacts do not have to be gpu related. Are you overclocking your system ram and cpu? Are all your system ram timings and voltages for cpu and ram set manually in your system bios? If you are overclocking your ram and cpu is your pci bus frequency locked? Are all your onboard peripherals, like onboard sound or video, disabled? Have you ran memtest86+ for at least an hour and tried to run a dual prime bench for at least an hour to see if your system is stable?

havent overclocked my system nor my ram. my voltages and timings are all default, havent tempered with any of them...
have run memtest for about 3 hours a while back, and there wasnt a problem.. havent done that dual prime bench though...

try setting your textures and mipmap textures to high quality in ATT. i have this problem where if i change them to quality or below, my whole screen would be filled with artifacts whe playing some games like warcraft3, need for speed carbon and some others...

I would guess that the most scientifically correct answer to this question would be..."Because it doesn't want to"!

Not really. CPUs and RAM modules are also the direct victims when it comes to overclocking, but CPUs are usually very tolerable and RAM modules are nearly imprevious to damage. However video card RAM chips and core pipelines are exceptionally easy to damage.

If your X800XT is anything like mine then your RAM chips will be bare. Not a heatsink in sight. Try adding some heatsinks or an aftermarket cooler if you havent already. The Ram has always been the cause of the artifacts on mine.

These type of questions wouldn't have to be asked if it wasn't so damn hard to pinpoint random artifacts in random games. Some mobo's do not set the correct voltages or timings for system hardware during boot detection of that hardware. Make sure everything in your bios is set to manual and manually configured. Make sure all other settings are correct per your board make and model in relation to your other system hardware. Also search for any support forums related to the games that you have artifacts in and see if anybody with similar hardware are have similar problems.
Just so you know...70c is actually in the high range for that card to be running at. In reality the x800 series runs best and overclocks the most if it is kept under 55c. This number is from my personal experience with my current x850xtpe and my next to last card which was a x800pro. Neither one of these cards ever reached close to 60c , let alone 70c. I would be really worried and actually shut my system down if they did.
