HyperMemory
I'm not sure if this has been asked before but,
What exactly does the term HyperMemory means?
Like for example i'm using a x1400 with 256MB HyperMemory.
Is the memory dedicated on the graphics itself or is it shared with the system RAM?

For a very indepth explanation of ATi's HyperMemory vs. nVidia's TurboCache, go here:

Essentially, there is dedicated memory on the video card with the ability to dynamically borrow/share system RAM.

Thx but how do i find out how much onboard vram my x1400 has?
I've noticed that in some benching programs, my vram would be read as 128MB while in DXDiag it would be read as "approx. 256MB".

May I assume that you have a laptop computer? If so, the X1400, if advertised as having 256 MB of HyperMemory, it actually has physical onboard VRAM of 128 MB and is sharing the other 128 MB with the System RAM.

Hypermemory cards cost the same as their non hypermemory counterparts at local places I've been to...so why not get the HyperMemory?
My $0.01

Depends on what the counterpart is you're talking about. Frankly, I don't want a card that has to share system RAM in order to meet the amount of RAM stated on the specifications.. If the card is advertised as having 256 MB of VRAM, I want that all to be on the card...not half of it being system RAM. As the article in the second link I posted says, this is quite misleading especially for those who are not privy to the information or fail to read the fine print.

Well I thought HyperMemory worked in a different way but I suppose at that price level it doesn't matter, those are all bare minimum low end cards

sorry for bumping up old thread...
i just upgrade my inspiron6400 to 1.5GB RAM instead of the original 1GB, and i was wondering if it is possible to assign more memory to the HyperMemory cache of the x1400?
if it is, how?

Neither do I, I believe its controlled by the card and the card's drivers.
