x1900xt heat\noise problem

My x1900xt is definately the loudest and hottest component of my computer. The problem is my desktop is in the same room I sleep as, and when operated in a close environment it tends to act as a furnace, in addition to creating a fair amount of background noise. Normally I just turn my computer off before I go to sleep, but I would like to be able to leave it on overnight for torrents\defragmenting, etc. Is there any type of power saving functionality I am unaware of that can simply turn the graphics card off after a period of time? That would be the best solution for me if it exists.

the card is very quite when no 3D games are running...

is your cards overdrive active and running allowing it to control the fan speeds...?

You can use something like Rivatuner or ATiTool to adjust the fan speeds.

I agree that the card is much much quieter in 2D mode. According to ATITool .25 beta 14 it is running at 27%. However, it is still pretty noisy, I guess in part due to my CoolerMaster case being basically a giant vent. I might be tempted to buy an aftermarket fan replacement. But the card does idle at 52 degrees celsius, and a better fan won't decrease the amount of heat generated and space heater effect.

Anyway I guess computers cannot turn off the graphics card similar to hard drives. My motherboard does have some shitty integrated video (gf 6150 or somethign like that), is there anyway to switch back and forth between integrated and a pciE video without causing driver problems?

Nope, to to that you need to turn on that integrated chip in BIOS and remove the x1900...

Of course you can. Create Hardware Profiles for each in ControlPanel > System > Hardware > Hardware profiles.

Oh, btw: in each profile, select the other video adapter to not be active ( = 'disabled in this hardware profile').


Each time you reboot you can select your preferred hardware profile.
