XP Pro and 9550XL not playing well together
Ok, bear with a noob here, but I just did the upgrade from XP Home to Pro. The 9550XL worked fine with Home, Pro can't find it. I'm getting the "10" code when trying to start it from "Install New Hardware Wizard" and the system can't seem to locate it as anything other than a RAGE XL PCI card. In trying to reinstall the drivers from the CD, the install bombs out with the "incorrect driver message"
Anybody had this problem with getting the card back on after an "upgrade" to Pro?
tnx

Greetings and welcome to Driverheaven!
First of all, it would be helpful if you'll list your system specs before we take very many stabs at resolving this issue.
One question I do have, though: Have you installed the latest motherboard drivers yet? These would be separate from the XP Pro CD installation.
Do that, if you haven't and do report back with any further information.
(FWIW, I was using a 9600 Pro with XP Pro for several months without any trouble.)

first of all, welcome to DH .
do what dyre said and give us a list of your sytem specs. Install the MoBo drivers, and video drivers would also be seperate from the winXP installation. You can get a new set of video drivers from ATI's website.
dyre was using a 9600 pro, but my two sisters are using two older cards yet; one is using an 8500LE 64Mb, and the other is using an 8500 128Mb (non-LE). both cards are working perfectly fine in both machines.
@ dyre: what does FWIW stand for?

Here's the basic skinny sans cows and steaks-
OS- MS XP Pro
Ver- 5.1.2.2600 Serv Pack 2 Build 2600
BIOS- Phoenix Tech 6.00 PG 5/7/03
SMBIOS Ver- 2.2
I'm a total rookie here on the maker of the MoBo. Any methods to determine this and where should I look for the drivers or am I just looking to update the BIOS?
The story thus far (Cliff Notes V2.1) Was running XP Home with 9550XL installed, no issues. Upgraded to XP PRO, no 9550XL. After uninstalling all ATI software, removing the card, reinstalling card and attempting to reinstall ATI drivers, the ATI install bombed with a "severe" error message that it couldn't finish the install. Repeated the process with the latest updates for XP Pro and the latest from ATI, same result.

In most situations, you'll need to look on the mobo itself for any ID for manufacturer and model. If it's not a really old mobo, this should be easy to locate.
Once you find that out, check the manufacturer's WEBsite for any updated BIOS. Check to see which BIOS version have by noting the original POST screen....this is the one that you will see when the computer first boots up to a screen. It shows the devices initializing, etc. There will be a series of numbers/letters usually across the bottom of the screen.
Another thing you 'may' be able to do is to install the drivers manually. This isn't all that difficult, either.
Just go to Device Manager and click the + in front of Display Adapters.
Now, double click on the first instance that is listed under that.
On the next screen click on the Driver tab.
Now select the Update Driver option.
On the next screen select the Install from a list....... and then click Next.
On the next screen select Don't search...... and click Next.
On the next screen click on Have Disk.....
Now, on the next screen you will need to navigate to the folder where the drivers were extracted. For ATI drivers the default is: C:\ATI\Support. If you've installed previous driver versions, just be sure to locate the one for the driver you are wanting to install as there will be other folders listed.
Once you locate and open the folder for the selected drivers, locate the 2KXP_INF folder and open that.
Once open, select the CX2K....INF file.
Now you're ready to install that.
Once done, do not Reboot just yet.
Repeat the above steps on the Secondary Display adapter.
Once done, reboot the system.
Good luck!

Haven't you ever heard this phrase? It comes from the act of using an elbow to poke someone in the ribs indicating that the person using the elbow has been pulling the other person's leg.
(Do I need to explain, 'pulling your leg', too? )

Ok-
Took a shot at the manual method. ASAIK, the mobo and bios are up to date, there didn't seem to be any updates available. I tried the manual method as listed. The Device Manager found an ATI card, Rage XL PCI. I selected that. (It's also printed physically on the card) I downloaded the newest version of Catalyst and ran it. Still no install. The message is a Code 10. Also, in trying the manual method, there was no file named CX2K....INF. I did find a file C:\ATI\SUPPORT\.....\2KXP_INF\CX_35179. The error message I'm getting now is taht the driver is not compatible with the card! This is beginning to get interesting.

Yes, it does seem to be getting interesting.
If this were my system, what I would do at this point would be to uninstall all video drivers. Then I would delete the directories where these drivers have been extracted. (C:\ATI for the official drivers and C:\Program Files\Radeon Omega Drivers for Omega's.)
Once that was done, I'd run CrapCleaner's Issues app to clean up the Windows Registry of any ATI/Omega-related keys. ( www.ccleaner.com)
Once this has been done, I'd go into Device Manager and REMOVE both instances of the ATI Display Adapters. There are normally TWO...the primary and the secondary. Remove both of those.
Now, once this has all been done, reboot the computer and let Windows install its native drivers for the VGA Compatible device it finds.
When it finishes that, check to see just how Windows identifies the card. Is it still the RAGE XL PCI?
If it IS, this sounds like a very old graphics card. The RAGE ID hasn't been used for quite some time now. All cards beginning with, I think, the 7000 series have been identified as RADEON cards. The RAGE ID goes back quite a few years ago and I had several of those. If this is the case (that it's actually a RAGE card) then I don't believe the newer drivers will ever support it. You'll have to go to the ATI site and get RAGE specific drivers for it.
Now, the puzzling part is, you say it's a 9550 XL. Is this card a Built By ATI or some 3rd Party company?
I'm beginning to wonder if it's been mislabeled. ??
