Does it remain fine after Alt+Tab even if you play for say 4 hours? If so you're looking at a driver issue, if not you're looking at possibly an overheating card or overheating memory (looks more like memory corruption)

Thanks for the reply
it can stay good for a while after alt tab out but sometimes it can come back very soon
hard to see a pattern with it.
the card is running up to 85 degrees under load
but i have a aerocool aero extreme 3T witha 120 side fan, 2 fans at the back, and a 80 in the front so id say its got flow although 85 degrees sounds high
ive orderd artic cooler for the card but the temp was the same when i first bought so im not sure about cooling issue.
which memory do you mean?

thanks again

I mean the memory on your graphics card, sounds like it might be getting hot... despite all that airflow

i hope its oonly a overheating problem
i read that these cards can operate normally up to 100 oC

it looks like the same problem i had which was the ram on the graphics card overheating. i was really worried at first as this was with a x850xt-pe and the card was brand new but after some investigating it turned out to be not so bad as here in the uk we were experiencing seriously hot weather (over 35c) and this caused the gfx card to run between 10 degrees c - 20 degrees c hotter than usual as the ambient temp in the case was hotter by about 15 degrees c which in turn caused the ram to overheat on the gfx card.

the solution to this was to take the side off the case and for added peice of mind i got a office fan and blew that into the case which kept everything cool enough to work right.

no the heat wave is over everything looks as though its running ok with the side back on also it might be worth cleaning all the dust off the fan on thefraphics card to make sure the cooling is effective.

The core can, not the memory

Yea i agree memory starts to bork at about 65 degrees c thats why they have heatsinks on them also it looks like it isthe memory that is overheating

you wouldn't believe the number of forums I've answered q's relating to overheating cos of the weather this summer.

people suddenly realising that a computer actually takes a bit of looking after lol

(and it doesn't help that companys like emachines etc sell comps without any internal cooling except the psu )

ok thanks for the replies

it does seem to be when the temp reading from overdrive goes over the 80oC

ive orderd a acrtic cooler for the card so i hope that does the trick
should receive it soon

and by the way i do look after my pc regulary cleaning out and i even treated it to an aero cool extreme engine 3T

even manages to keep my 3.4 prescott under 47 degrees idle

thanks again

i would just take the side iff the pc and blow a desk fan if u have one, into the case just to make sure it is a cooling problem

the artic cooler will work fine if u can get the memory heatsinks off the 9800xt (on the 9800xt i had the ramsinks were bonded to the memory chips) another point as u are quoting in pounds are u in the uk ????? if so u might find that now the hot weather has passed the card might work fine without replacing the cooler.

if u are really after a new gfx card you will be stuck with agp you are gonna struggle to get a decent gfx card that performs better than the card you already own there is this option

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/105566

but these cards perform roughly the same as the 9800 xt yoy have already but they only have 128 bit memory bus.

i would see if you can get the 9800 xt working before u start looking for new cards now you have the cooler..

thanks for the reply,
looks like a nice card and quite cheap
im english but i live in holland i still buy alot from england,
its been very warm here too but today im still having trouble
and its not that warm but after 20 mins gaming comes the triangles again,
i dont think i have to remove any heat sinks its a direct replcacement for this cooler but its supposed\
to be 10 times better,
ive seen my card temps in the 90,s today

the temp of everything always drops about 10 degrees c and this drop in temprature helps everything as the cooler the ambient air inside your case the more effective the heatsink and coolers can be.

like i sed before give it a try with the side off and the new cooler on before investing any cash in a new graphics card as vista is out soon (end of the year or beginning of next) and it seems stupid to invest in a new dx9 card now for about 8 -10 months when u can just go out and get a dx10 one when they are released.

I wouldn't hold my breath for DX10... its best to get that when its out, Vista keeps getting delayed over and over... and DX10 is Vista only... so why bother waiting

also remember that they need time to perfect the video cards to accomodate dx10. If i were you, I will wait for the dx10 cards to be in a mature level inorder to invest on one.
