Ati 9800 crash! What is the problem? [view image]
Hi, boyz
I'm Italian, excuse me for my bad English. I've a problem with my Ati 9800 128 mb. Since three days, it crashes and I don't know why. The problem exists both in windows and dos. I attach an image of what happen when I play a game or work with windows.

I hope you can help me, because I can't buy a new video card.
Thanks to all
Byez from Italy

It looks like it is overheating. Check to make sure the fan is still turning on the card.

How well is the airflow in your computer's case? Make sure there are no cables obstructing the airflow and, if possible, add a fan to blow onto the video card to see if that makes any difference. The image does indicate overheating.
Which driver version are you using?
Are you doing any Overclocking?

i had the same problem with my bro's ATI 9800 pro modded to XT it worked just fine past 2 years as an XT and he started having artifacts and crashes after some testings and buying a zalman vf900 kit the card not only works flawlessly it overclocks damn well ....
P.S the best way to c if its infact heat issues is to open ur case and near it to a normal house fan (it can get pritty hot in italy too so i guess u must have at least one fan) and direct it into the case and c if things still are shaky, my belif is that youl be pleased with the results just with the house fan but i would recommend buying a proper kit for long term good luck....

Hi...
thanks for your answers...
My room is very hot (26°C -30°C) and i opened the case.
The ATI fan is ok, and i've last Catalyst installed (updated this afternoon trying to resolve the problem).
Can i measure ati temperature with a software?
I did an overclock next year, failed, and i'd this problem other times. Can it be damaged by overclock? Can i reset it to default values to solve problem?
Help me please
PS: since two months i'd no crashes caused by video card

i aint surprised ur gpu fan is working its a very hot chip and needs rather big passive cooling to operate so with no fan it wouldnt last long.
as for ur room yes its above normal but not very hot u should think of getting an A/C for ur self.
9800 pro even with r360 chips dont carry the temperature sensor as far as i know, so u cant measure via software.
bout that overclock u tried last year, yes overclock can damage ur card but usually it will take more then just one try to do that unless ur really trying to mess it up.
over overclocking will usually show its signs by first showing artifacts here and there then alot (depending on what ur overclocking the GPU or the MEM) then crashes 3d apps and games then locks up and so forth.....
depending how u did that overclock ??? if its via bios then u need to reflash ur bios with default clocks... if its via RIVATUNER or ATITOOL ect u need to disable the overclock via the programs, shouldnt be a problem. as for sovling ur problem yes it may solve it if the problem is pushed overclocking.
if that doesnt help i would recommend the following:
1) get a big fan(normal home use one borrow one it cant be that hard to get one and they are rather cheap if u dont have one and are that hot in the room cant do too much harm to have around) and try pointing it into the case doesnt have to be on fastest setting just to have some good air flowing inside the case specially on the card GPU and RAM.
2) if that works and u dont get any more artifacts u have to choices:
a) keep that fan on while ur playing.
b1) depending on ur skills start from cleaning ur case fans and making sure u have good air flow specially cleaning the fans and specially ur cards fan make sure that when u give the fan slight push it actually turns for more then a sec on its own or u need to "oil" it up.
b2) if that still doesnt work well i would try reapplying thermal paste on the GPU (this actually isnt that hard but needs abit of skill and no clumsy hands (not that dangerous coz the chip isnt actuallyunder the fan its covered by its metal casing so its not that easy to damage it).
after u remove the GPU FAN u need to clean the old termal paste with alcohol preffred(clean the RAM as well) and reapply some on the GPU (for that u need to buy some its actually pritty cheap so if u buy get a good one i would recommend artic silver 5). this will lower ur GPU TEMP but if the problem is with ur ram then u could try geting heatsyncs for ur ram they are pritty cheap as well.
but the best thing to do is if u actually find out that its a heat problem and its not overclocking related u should change ur fan and upgrade it with a better cooling solution i would recommend any zalman with ram syncs would be better then ur current solution (its abit more costy yes but if u get a nice one which costs less then a better card or equal u can actually overclock ur card pritty nicelly and then mod it to an XT and even then overclock it even more so that would be the best option).
GOOD luck and i hope i didnt leave anything out...

Hi!
Thanks for answer, boy.
I tryed to use my home fan in the case, but without good results.
I tryed to remove GPU fan and there was dust over the chip. I cleaned it, but i've not therman paste to add under the fan.
After cleaning, result is this:
Tomorrow I try to add thermal paste and retest it.
I hope you'll write me and suggest other solutions, if your suggestion will not solve the problem.
Thanks for your help
Sincerely
Axel

hmmm , my first question for u would be how does ur pc boot? meaning when u boot do u see any tearing and or displasments like ur screen shot showed?
did u try removing ur OC?
i am not sure what did u clean when u removed the fan coz if u cleaned the themal paste and then put the fan back on and tried it i must say its not a very wise thing to do specially in ur situation..
did u have any in windows 2d tearing before?
i do have a couple things i would have tried.. but i wouldnt suggest(to treat the semptoms) them unless u have thermal paste and or ur big house fan blowing to avoid overheating when testing those new clocks.
1) underclocking using atitool or riva tuner(both ram and gpu).
2) trying to disable write combining in ur troubleshooting tab in ur display settings (ovcorse restarting).
3)trying to enable or disable fast writes(ovcorse restarting if u changed that from smartgart).
4)trying to lower hardware acceleration from full in the same troubleshooting tab (note that will impact ur 3d performance because it disables features the lower u go).
well there is more but this is enough for this time at least i sure hope u get better results ....
good luck.

tested! With this solution, my videocard is running better, with less signs of crash! How can I solve this problem?

nice to hear something imporved ur viewing, thermal paste should improve by at least couple degres(did u try with the big fan after applying the thermal paste?), and the fact that didnt have much effect must indicate that its more of a ram over heating though its abit wierd underclocking didnt have any effect(u did try lowering the ram too? ), did u ever flash that cards bios?
waiting for the rest of ur results... good luck
p.s Congrats on wining the world cup

No, i haven't tryed to apply big fan. Now I test. I would try to unclock video ram.
PS: No, i haven't yet update my bios. Can be a problem due bios old?
Another question:
In the bad case (crashed video card), what video card you suggest me?
I've seen the x800 xt agp for 200 € (254 USD). What do you think about this? Is it a good card (I can bought only AGP Card because my MB don't support PCI Express).
My pc:
Intel P4 3.2 GhZ
1 Gb Ram
HD 160 Gb
MB Asus P5P800

the X800XT is about twice as fast as the 9800XT, so yup the card is pretty good, i have no complains at all, it does what that kind of hardware should do
the standard ati cooler on the card is a little noisy when it runs at full speed so i think its a good idea to remove it and put on a 3th party cooler

200 € is a good price? What do you think about X1800 GTO or XL ?

The X800 XL is an EXCELLENT card. I've had mine for almost a year now with no problems at all.
Also, for your 9800, try changing in the BIOS from 8X AGP to 4X and see if that helps.

in OC i ment OverClocking you said u had or did last year (u wrote next year so i guess it was last) how did u do that overclock? my guess would be via software did u check the box that applyes that OC on every "boot"?
and bout that x800xt its sure a sweet card almost bought a x850XT PE a while and since i choose not to for various reasons at the time and i am glad i didnt (sure am an ATI fan when putting things aside).
before recommending u anything i will try and give u some guiding questions....
1) how much do u really play?
2) what kind of monitor do u have? (CRT 19,21 inch supporting 1600x1200 or even higher or an LCD 15,17 inch rather old monitor 1024x768 supporting with higher then 12ms response times OR a rather new 17,19.... LCD DVI with 1280x1024 NATIVE resolution with 12ms or lower response times)?
3) when u play a game do u leave it on automatic settings or do u actually try to tweak ur way into having best performance OR best appearance (while still playable ovcorse) ?
4) Are "latest" technologies support important during ur gameplay (for example SM3 or HDR)?
5) are u planning on migrating to WINDOWS VISTA when it comes out?
6)are you planning on replacing this computer any time soon?
7) how much are u really ready to spend now and how much are u hoping to get?
================================================== ==
those are the qestions ... think about them and if and when u decide to answer them here i might be able to suggest a right card for u..
have a good night
p.s when u perform the rest of the tests i suggested before and depending on the answers i will adress the bios department for its a step down the line...

Is it still covered by warranty? RMA it if it is. I had the exact same problem on a 9800 pro 256mb. I think there was a problem with certain types of ram. 9800 pro w/ 256mb had ddr2, exchanged it for a 9800xt w/ 256 ddr and worked great.
Also, I got an ATI silencer which has been really good. Keeps my temps under control and no more system lock ups due to heat probs.
