X800GTO issue

Hi,

My comp locks up (it's more like it just slows WAAAAYYYY down - like my CPU is spiking or something) when booting into Windows. But when I uninstall the display adapters while in SafeMode and then reboot it gets into Windows just fine (minus Catalyst drivers).
As soon as I reinstall the drivers (no matter which version) the same thing happens again. I thought it was something in the ATI drivers so I tried the Omega drivers but had the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this kind of post...

Windows XP Pro SP1
2gb Crucial Dual Channel RAM

Did you use DriverCleaner Pro in between driver installations?

Yes I did. And that bothers me a bit...

I also uninstalled my chipset drivers thinking it was an AGP issue, but that did nothing as well. Do you think I need to flash my VGA bios? That sounds a little risky to me...

Thanks

New info

Here's the prob. In the last two days my video drivers have been crapping out on me. So, I uninstalled and even used Driver Cleaner and Cab cleaner (which both do a wonderful job of removing traces of old drivers). All of this was done in Safe Mode.

Upon rebooting Windows my video hardware is discovered and I opt not to install the hardware. I then install either the Catalyst Drivers or the Omega Drivers (third party which apparantly work just as well) for my X800 GTO. Naturally, I need to reboot at this point. Upon reloading Windows attempts to adjust the resolution to better fit my LCD. This is where the problem is: when it tried to adjust the resolution my CPU spikes to 100% and stays there and I can't do anything.

I reboot in safe mode and uninstall just as before then go through the procedure again but this time not letting Windows automatically adjust the resolution and just leave it at the crappy 800x600. My chipset drivers and BIOS are all up to date and Windows is as up-to-date as SP1 can be. HELP ME!!!!!
