I had that same board with my 9800 pro, and had the same problems in ms word, and even browsing the internet I had that problem, or just going to a black screen and eventually rebooting the computer. I have it chalked up to a mobo incompatibility...everything works great in my new board. I had these problems with a 9600pro too, but never my radeon 8500 or 7000.

Try the 9550 in another computer if you can, but I'm sure it will be fine.

This may or may not be the issue, BUT, I have never had good success using a board with a VIA chipset. I don't know if there's a compatibility problem between VIA and ATi cards specifically, or just certain setups.

However, I have decided to avoid any motherboard with VIA from now on. Someone would have to really give me some solid reasons for changing my mind.

Not everything is VIA's fault? Especially that SB Live thing, that was more Creative than VIA.

I don't think its compatibility, I think its the putting of a newer AGP card in an older AGP mobo
