Black Screen on ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
Hi all,
Several weeks ago I notice a strange problem with my PC. Whenever I run 3D games like Neverwinter Nights, etc, My screen will go black and my computer will stop responding. CTRL-ATL-DEL does even work, I have to manually shutdown the PC. Basically, I startup the games and and during the selection of load games or new games or etc, my screen will go black. The timing of the problem is random, it could be 5 seconds after I started up the games or 10 seconds. I can't get to the playing part though, the black screen happen before I get there. I thought that there was something wrong with the game and I re-install it. The problem is still there. I even tried to install Dragonshard and I could not even go past the part where it is asking for the key. I am able to watch movie, surt the web fine, I've tried using different seting on the display and it does not help. I also tried switching monitor and it does not help. I format the computer and re-install everything still nothing. Any ideas? I am running out of ideas. If my graphic card is busted, I should not be able to view anything right? Any suggestion at all will be great. Thank you so much. My PC's spec: Intel 3.2Ghz MB: Asus P4P800 Deluxe Memory: 1 Gig Video card: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (Latest driver) Space:100G free OS: WinXP pro SP2 Directx 9c Thank you very much Regards |

What is your power supply like? Have you checked the video card's heatsink and fan and make sure they're operating OK, not getting too hot/fan not spinning?

Looks like the card is overheating.
I think the fan has seized, unless you're playing with the speed within ATI Tool/ATI Tray Tools or another program. You might consider aftermarket cooling, which has the added benefit of cooling better and being quieter than the stock cooler. In either case do it ASAP the card is dying |

No problem.
No need to buy a new card though. You can always get an Arctic Silencer or a Zalman VF700 AlCu and it would fix the problem |
