9800XT Overheated...

So last night while I was sleeping, my fan for my 9800XT must have stopped spinning resulting in my card overheating and my computer shutting down. After I oiled the fan and started it back up, I saw vertical lines of dashes on my startup screen and while in windows I notice various problems such as on my curose there are goofy slashes on the sides of it. What do I do in this situation. Am I forced to buy a new video card?

I'm afraid so. My first 9800Pro had similar arthefacts when I first got it, and when I brought it back to the store they replaced it right away.

If the card isn't on warranty it might be dead. You *might* try getting a better cooler on it or see if underclocking affects it at all, but I suspect it may be dead.

Yeah, every 2 weeks or so I had to oil my fan to stop it from making noise. I had purchased a new fan / heatsink for it but because of using a Shuttle I wasn't able to install it without havin to alter the case. Guess I should have sacrificed. Eitherway it's a good excuse to buy a new video card. My new question is what video card do I purchase? I'm hoping there is a card at either Best Buy or Circuit City I can pick up for a good price if not then I'll just order it online, but the faster I can get it the better. I need it for school.

If its dying you have to oil it or it keeps getting worse and can make some nasty smell once the bearing starts overheating

Well, if it's dying, it should be replaced...oiling could easily make it run much slower than it is designed to, and make matters worse.

Well if you use the wrong oil the fan shorts out and dies. But using the right kind of thin household oil (like for sewing machines) easily ressurected some fans I thought were dead and even mades ones that were fine but a tad noisy a little bit quieter
