High Pitched Metallic Ring on Playback/Rec

Audio playback was fine until I connected the prolog/epilog as directed in The Guide.

When I unmuted and raised the AC97 volume to 100 (as directed) there is a high pitched metallic ringing/echo that continues into recording/playback in Cubase SX.

When I lower the AC97 volume to say, 50, the metallinc ringing etc goes away mostly but then it is too low of a volume to use?

Am I missing something, or did I screw up on the "connections", or...?

Yup, you've got feedback happening. I had that problem too. Sounded terrible!!! I disconnected something (I forget what now) in the DSP page and it was cured.
