Read realtime Data from LineIn

Hi,
I need to read left and right channels of LineIn input. I tried winmm apis and failed to use them. A friend adviced me to try ASIO. I setup the ASIO drivers for the sound card but couldn't find any way to communicate with the drivers. I found an activeX wrapper project for delphi but I couldn't use it with Visual Basic. By the way I am using VB.
All I need is to read realtime (or near) L/R channels when I need (approximately every msec). 10msec or alittle more latency is not important as this is not a DSP project.

Is this project (kxProject) for me?
Where to start? Can any of you explain step by step what to do?

please don;t post the same question twice… but what do you mena by "read" do you mean record or just see the peak meter?
