Noob trying to get Ableton Live! to work with ASIO

OK I'm pretty new at everything, I've used kX for a while but only because my audiophile friend recommended it and it's pretty easy to set up with the default options.

However I've decided I want to try to learn to mix and seeing as 90% of my music collection is in mp3 format I've gone for software mixing, or more specifically Ableton Live!. I've set up Live to output the master to 3/4 and cue to 5/6 (2/3 and 4/5 in kX respectively). From reading this thread I understand that I route FXBuses 2/3 and 4/5 to their equivalent ASIO inputs on the epilog. I just don't understand where the signal goes from there. I tried just disconnecting the relevant FXBuses from xrouting and connecting them to their equivalent ASIO but when I play either master or cue in Live no sound emerges from anywhere.

I have a 5.1 sound system plugged into an Audigy 2 ZS, I usually use a splitter to listen on headphones but that's not going to work with this fairly obviously so I figure if I take the rear satellites out and plug my headphones into their output I can have 2.1 (well 3.1 technically but wtf is that?) while using my headphones to cue tracks for mixing. I just have absolutely no real idea what I'm doing and I was wondering how I make that work?

http://www.theboysontour.eu/stuff/asio.jpg - that's the DSP I normally use which is fairly default for 5.1 afaik.

I'm using kX Version: 5, 10, 00, 3538

I am sorry but you need to be a little more specific about what you are trying to do.

In the other thread, that user wanted to play his audio using one application, and process that audio (in realtime using ASIO) in another application. You only mentioned using Ableton, so I am not sure if your situation is similar, or if you are trying to do something different.

(In the other thread, wave audio (kX Wave 4/5) was routed to ASIO on epilog, it wasn't ASIO to ASIO).

Ableton is a Recording/Mixing studio app. I want to mix with it. To mix you need to cue a record (or in my case mp3) so that only you can hear it, to mix it into the "master". The way ableton does this is to allow you to assign the master and the cue to separate ASIO channels (not sure if channel is the right word but I'm sure you get me), because both signals are stereo you need 4 ASIO channels in total. I want my master channels (currently set to 3/4 aka 2/3 in kX) to go to my sub/front 2 satellites and my cue channels to go to my headphones which are plugged into the rear satellite jack on my PC. So really my situation is completely different I guess as I'm only using the one app.

Is that specific enough? I don't really know how else to describe it, would screenshots of what I'm talking about in ableton help?

That is what I thought, but wanted to be sure.

Set Master to use ASIO 4/5.
Set Cue to use ASIO 6/7.

You should not have to modify your DSP config for this, as the default routiing will do what you want.

Hehe, you could also do 4.0 (Line Out 3 does not have to be used for Center/LFE)

Perfect, thanks for your help. Wish I'd known it was that simple, would have saved a lot of effort!

Glad to help

BTW: For DirectSound3D, kX (by default) uses FxBus 4/5 for front, 6/7 for rear, and 8/9 for center/LFE, so you can use those FxBuses (i.e. ASIO or kX Wave) to send audio to those speaker outputs (look at the kX Router section in kX Help).
