Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to return the analogue input from an external synth back into Cubase SX so that I can make an export of a project (Audio mixdown). I setup the synth with two ASIO inputs (via line 3) as a return, but then am lost on how to proceed. Do I have to use the monitor? If so, the KX FAQ states that there is no use for Direct Monitoring with KX?? I do not understand this. I would like to have the full Cubase gadgets and mixers to do my stuff. Is this possible or should I wander a different path in this matter?

in the kX DSP route the input you are using (line in etc) directly to an asio input on the epilog

you should be able to pick it up as an input in cubase and then record into that

Direct monitoring (I call 'hardware monitoring') - is not always assumed. And depends on DSP config...

if an input in KX DSP is routed to ASIO 'record' input as well as an epilog 'monitor' output - you will hear what is being recorded. - This is refered to 'hardware monitoring'

BUT - if the input is routed to ASIO only - you need to use 'software monitoring' to hear what is being recorded in cubase. Software monitoring is usually a per track setting in DAW hosts and adds additional latency.

Thanks for the swift response to the question...

It does however not answer my question. I think I should have been more specific.

In Cubase you can specifiy the return bus for external equipment. So I setup my synth on the ASIO channels it is connected to. I can see with a peak meter that on this channel the sounds are present from the inputs. So they are wired from the prolog to the epilog. I would think that all I have to do is enable the monitor, but here it goes wrong. The switch (Cubase pref) cannot be enabled. It is greyed out.. ("Direct monitoring" in "VST multibay"). The Cubase help says that if this is the case, the driver does not support the ASIO direct monitoring.

Maybe I did not fully understand either of your answers... (I am quite a newbie)....

Also I would like to thank all the people that are developing and supporting this great driver!

kX does not support Cubase's direct monitoring feature

use kX to enable it yourself, using the kX mixer to allow you to hear the pure signal of the synth through your speakers before it reaches cubase (which is essentially what direct monitoring is)
enable the input you are recording from in the I/O window and set the level via the fader

if you want to hear the synth in cubase with any VST effects on it, then that is a completely different matter

Can this be done in real time? I mean can the signal be routed back to Cubase and then processed with effects so a mixdown is made without an intermediate recording step?

you should be able to monitor in cubase after the effects (in logic that's what i do)

however in logic i have to record the synth, and then mix down. That may be what you have to do in cubase, but you'd have to check

I found the answer to my earlier 'problem'..! In Cubase you can define a return bus for external equipment. If you do so, the external equipment appears in the VST selection window. Then you can setup gain and delay parameters for the synth. This totally eliminates the recording step you have to do otherwise!! And it makes it possible to hook up any other VST effect in real time!
This way a one step export also works fine for external eq.
