Killer Effects

I got an SBLive for the main purpose of using kx and using my computer as a real time effects processor, using Amplitube. It worked like a charm(minus the line in noise that we all know is a problem with the AC97 codec).

One technique that I have noticed that pros use to get thick guitar tracks. Record the guitar track twice. Pan one of the recordings completely left, the other completely right. Since the two tracks are slightly different, it creates serious thickness to simple tracks even. Also, the effects, such as the distortion, is applied seperately to each channel, rather than effects applied and then delay applied to do the panning. Nearly the same effect can be acheieved if the recorded track is copied and pasted to a seperate track and the shifted a few millisecond(I know, this is the same as delay, but, as noted earlier, the effects are applied seperately to each channel, creatin a spatial sound). This technique works especially well with distorted guitar tracks, since that is mainly what I listen to and record, I know this very well.

Well, with that said, I wanted to create this effect live from my guitar with DSound RT Player and IK Multimedia Amplitube. I found that simple delay would not cut it( as it does not normally). So here was my plan, to split the imput(my guitar) into 2, one for the left and one for the right. Apply the effect to each channel seperately and delay one of the channel slightly to get that spatial feel. I found that DSound RT Player was not capable of this. Since Amplitube takes a mono input(or converts any source it recieves to mono) and outputs a stereo output, two seperate asio outputs need to be used. One of them only for the left, the other for the right. So instead I used a free standalone VST host that is capable of using multiple asio sources(eg. kx in 00&01 and kx in 02&03) and using muliple asio outputs(eg. kx out 00 and kx out 02).The VST Host that I am talking about is free from Fxpansion and is in beta form still. It is called Simple VST Host(SVH for short). You can download it here

In the kx router setup kx asio out 00 for left output only and kx out 02 for right only. Set the input on two channels in SVH for the same input (kx in 02 for me). Now apply Amplitube on each channel. Use the same presets on both sides, but on one side, add delay from the stomp section of Amplitube. Turn the delay almost to 0, and turn the level all the way up, so that you don't even here the dry source on this channel, only the delayed signal. This effect has a killer live sound that is seriously thick! I doubt seriously that I could have rigged this without the numerous features that kx has. So even if you have an expensive board, you would probably have a hard time doind this!

SO THANK YOU KX TEAM, YOU RULE!!!!

Kind of a mini tutorial that I just wrote, here is SCREENSHOTS to help.

Cheers
