LineIN will not record. StereoMix will but all my tracks are mixed with new tracks.

Cubase SX driver is working now thanks to those that gave help in previous postings. I routed AC97 L&R to the epilog in ASIO0&1 and that corrected the problem. Thanks!

My only problem now is VST audio that has been recorded on a track (in CubaseSX) is being re-recorded on the second track that is set to HOT (or Monitored). You can see that the new track is "hearing" audio from the previous track. This is a problem because I can not record new VST audio without it being combined with previous track. I guess the new routing scheme seems to be recording ALL audio from AC97 main out. So the new track is just going to be a combination of all audio.

Is there a way to isolate tracks so that I can play back all my tracks and record an isolated track simultaneously? You're right some VSTi do (NI). But the ones I am using are small and only have the ability to generate the sound, nothing else. I think we're getting close to the problem though. I chesked the AC97 setting and you're right, "Stereo Mix" was selected. I switched to LINE IN and a few others but the only setting that would permit anything to actually be recorded was "Stereo Mix".

SOMEONE PLEASE try this in Cubase SX.
1) Arm an audio track for recording.
2) Record anything for a few seconds.
3) Unarm the first track and switch to a new audio track and arm it for recording a new track.
4) Press play (or record). The first track will playback while you record the new one.

Does the new track pick up on the audio from the first track?
5) Record something new onto track 2.
6) Mute the first track or completely turn the audio off of track 1.
7) Press play again

Did the new track (track-2) merge the audio from track-1 into your new recording? How do you stop that from happening? I need the tracks isolated but I still need to be able to hear the previous tracks played back while I record a new one. I have all channels turned up and all settingd unmuted (in Mixer, recording, and AC97)... I now have LineIN selected in AC97. And Now I can NOT record anything. If I switch back to StereoMix It will record. Please Help. I am routed to ASIO0&1 (14&15 didn't seem to work for me). If I switch it back, it won't record. Is there another setting? Are there any users of the same SBLive! card NOT having this problem? If so what setting are you using?

Ok, I followed your instructions and the track DO NOT get mixed. So you have something messed up in KX mixer or in your audio connections. Re-check the following please:

0) Recheck that you have KX ASIO and not ASIO MULTIMEDIA drivers loaded in Cubase
1) See in KX mixer IN AND OUT'S page if the AC97 faders are all the way up and if they are enabled (you may mute and turn down all other inputs)
2) Check in KX mixer AC97 page if you have LINE IN selected in the drop down box. Mute all the inputs in this page and turn all volumes down.
3) Check in the back of your sblive if you connected the cable to LINE IN and NOT to the MIC IN.
4) Check in KX DSP windows if AC97 L and R outs (prolog) are connect to ASIO 0 and 1 (epilog).
That makes everything work just fine for me.
5) If you are using an external mixer check if you're not sending the output sound of the computer back into the line in connector...

Also, remember that the best way to record sounds from VST instruments is not having them play and record them into a audio track. You don't need to do that. You can select that single track and export it to wav. This way you have less background noise and have no influence from other channels.

Also, if you want you can disconnect AC97 R and L from the ROUTING object. This way you don't hear double sounds when using the monitoring function in Cubase.

Let me know if this works out for you.

Thumbs Up!

I tried what you were suggesting pertaining to recording by export to audio. Even though I have been set against using this method in the past, you’re right it’s a really good way to record VST audio. It’s much easier and the performance and automation can be tweaked to perfection before you push to an audio file.

Every step you are suggesting is exactly what I have except step three. I didn’t understand step three where you said “make sure that I’m plugged into the LineIn, not MicIn”. I am not plugged into anything in the back of the SBLive. I thought I would be able to record VST audio without patching a cable from line-out to line-in. And I though that if I tried that, I would get the same result – It would record a stereo mix.

At this point it doesn’t really matter… Since your very first suggestion is going to work better (i.e. export MIDI to Audio), I will do that and just use the line in for guitar, bass and other external audio.

So pardon my idiocy, and I’m all set.
Thanks!

You only need to use line in if you are recording outboard gear. For VSTi's there is no need to use the line input. You shouldn't even need to set up the other steps I told you. I thought you were also trying to record external gear... For VSTis just do the export command. It does the job really greatly and easily. Good it's working out that way for you.
