WMP11 won't play WMV

Last week WMP stopped playing my WMV files. I get the "...not supported...codec..." message. These are files that i have created and even downloaded files don't play. Funny thing is that Nero Showtime will play them, so surely the system recognises the codec.

Or you can try to install WMF codecs: Download Windows Media Format Runtime 11 - Windows Media Format runtime is required for WMA (Windows Media Audio) and WMV (Windows Media Video) - Softpedia

Thanks but it won't install. "not enough storage is available to process this command"
Whatever that means. My C has 160gb free.

While fooling around i managed to play a wmv file that has no sound. So all my files that have no audio stream work. Which leads me to believe maybe the x-fi beta drivers i installed has something to do with it.

The new drivers are working good, so i'll only uninstall as a last resort.

I'll see if i can get some more info on this error...

Why don't you uninstall and then re install WMP?

Not sure how to go about doing that on Vista. You cannot download WMP11 for Vista and i don't see anything to uninstall in Programs and Features. That's why people use vLite, to get rid of hardwired components.

I'll keep searching...

Perhaps it is in the windows components like under XP. Control panel, add remove programs, do you get a tab there?

Programs & Features, which is the Vista version of Add/Remove doesn't have a Windows Components section. So no uninstalling WMP11.

Anyways, i fixed it. Right clicked speaker icon in the taskbar, selected Sounds, then got an error message about some compatibility with enhanced x-fi features on this device, i disabled it and voila, it works.

It was a bug in the beta x-fi drivers after all. CMSS3D not working on Vista 64bit. I had it disabled through creatives control panel, but needed to disable it within windows control panel too, hence the error message.

I can now play microsoft files using a microsoft player on a microsoft os again...

I'm pretty sure getting my Creative hardware working properly has caused me as much frustration as all the rest of my hardware combined.

Yeah, my relationship with Creative has been a love hate relationship since after my SB16. I just wish one day they will remove their hand off their...ear and start releasing some proper drivers for once.

The new creative beta drivers broke WMP on both our x64 machines and caused a few other issues as well. Going back to the last release fixed everything though. Just a heads up for anyone with similar issues
