Which Commercial Burning Software Do You Use?

Of course, the two major players are NERO and ROXIO. There's a THIRD option for OTHER.

So, please select the one you like most and give some reasons for your choice. ALSO, please list the VERSION of the software you use.

However, now that ImageBurn has reading capabilities (where it didn't initially) I'm using it more and more now... and it's free (and not blacklisted either).

In the case of DVD authoring, probably Ifoedit (works best with Win2K), or your best would be the free version of Video DVD Maker. Both allow you to select all the movie files you want to add to a DVD, and then output the necessary files and file/folder structures to make that DVD playable in any player. 'Course, you will still need to convert all your media over to a compatible format (being MPG2) before you do the authoring, which is where Video DVD Maker comes in. That software allows you to capture, convert, and even burn the DVD. The only down side? It goes by whatever encoders are in the system, so if you don't have anything decent installed it might encode using something.. crappy.

So many using Nero, huh?

OK, let me ask this: When I tried using NERO some time ago, I found that I couldn't burn from shared files/folders on the LAN. Adaptec/Roxio did, and DOES, allow for burning onto media from the network. So, does NERO now support this?

Whenever I was 'stuck' with using NERO in the past, I'd first have to tranfer the files/folders over to the system on which NERO was installed and then do the burning.

NOW, one other note: I noticed no one really has explained WHY you use the particular software you use. As NERO is often included with DVD/CD burners, is it mainly because it's packaged this way?

I think nero is the greatest. I would use it if I could get it to work right on my computer. I used it for a long time for 1 thing... functionality. It can do anything and everything without a confusing interface. I hate easy media creator cuz I think its full of junk/extra steps!

Also, http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ CD Burner XP Pro is one of the best burning programs I have recommended. Even 80 yr old people I have given the link to could figure it out over nero and roxio.

I use Nero coz it allows me to make CDs and DVDs of whatever I want, and also convert some files to be played on my DVD player or to make Slide Shows for my photos.

As I said, it allows me to do what I want

I prefer Windows Vista's CD Burning capabilities,

the only time i need (in which case i use) NERO, is for burning ISO's or doing other non-typical burning related situations.

Windows XP, use the included xp burning stuff UNLESS a DVD-Burner is installed, then nero is loaded.

Gone through a few versions of Nero that don't work nicely for me in Vista... so I've basically stopped burning stuff, will have to figure something out, or my drives are going to get full.

I haven't tried this with version 7, but I know this was a long standing issue with Nero 6. Don't know exactly why Nero can't do network burning, but it probably has to do with the way Nero caches smaller files before actually burning anything. It either can't get enough access, or rather can't gain the leve of control it wants over those files, and get's all in a hissy fit over it.

As for why Nero? Simplicty. It's probably got the easiest, and most straightforward interface. If you want to burn a DVD, you do this. Burn a music CD, do this. Convert music/movies, do this. Oh, and Nero 7 has copy protection (where you can add it to your burned discs), Blu-Ray, and HDDVD authoring support, which Roxio doesn't.

And yes, most times you get at least Nero 6.6 for free with the burner, so that's one less piece of software I have to supply.

I say "most times" because not every drive comes with something, such as the case with the OEM Pioneer drives. With Pioneer it's up to the distributors to supply the dics, and most don't (which is why I have a pile of copies). With LG, though, you usually get the OEM versions of Cyberlink PowerDVD and Nero Express from them directly, or with Samsung you will get the OEM version of Nero Suite (which includes Nero Express and Showtime), and has the Lightscribe support.

The only problem of CDBurnerXP is that its development is SLOW. They post some news like "there will be a new version next week" and then a few months later they release another alpha/beta . And about it being free - that applies to the (very rare) final versions only. You have to donate to get access to the beta versions.

I use InfraRecorder now: http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

I may have to check that out. I noticed how slow they are w/ cdburnerxp, but the versions that are out are pretty damn solid.

I've been using Nero Burning ROM 6.x now for awhile and have enjoyed using it.

BUT...and this is a real bummer! It has created a Windows Registry error upon each reboot of the system. It finally caused me to do a full new installation of Windows XP Pro SP2 without knowing that is was NERO causing theh problem. That is, until I went to install it on the new Windows install.

As soon as I uninstalled Nero and rebooted, the error disappeared.

So, is anyone else plagued with this error? I'm using the CD that came with my Samsung DVD writer and the ROM version is:

6.6.0.19b

Roxio Easy Media Creator 9.
transfer DivX content or programming from a TiVo system or set-top DVD recorder
i'm going to upgrade to 10 this week too since its on sale.
They say, about creator 10:
  • A 3 step wizard lets you auto-edit your movie. Then upload to YouTube in one click or put it on DVD.
  • Capture and edit HD video and add surround sound playback.
  • Record internet radio, batch convert files, backup your iPod and more.
  • Enhance photos and video taken on your mobile devices and use them in projects with your other media .

Nero 7, never liked the early versions of Nero below 6 though for the interface, used Blindwrite or Alcohol or anything else until Nero 6 came out. I like Nero 7 for it's interface and usability, not to mention its functionality as well.
