I gave this a whirl the other day out of pure boredom/laziness - couldn't be bothered standing up and moving less than a metre to actually use my laptop (was set up on my DJ rig), and it'sa bit of a novelty to me right now

To enable screensharing you'll need to know the username and password of an admin account (I think it has to be admin) on the computer you want to view

Essentially screensharing works in a similiar way to running a virtual machine, you've got a seperate "window" in which you can see everything that's on the screen of the machine you're sharing - in the above pic, as my laptop has a lower res than my desktop monitor, you can see the entire desktop - if I try it the other way, my dual monitor view is shrunk down to fit the width of the laptop's display (2880px reduced down to 1280px) as shown below



As you can see, not exactly the ideal situation, so if you're going to use screensharing, make sure either both computers have the same resolution, or that you view the smaller res machine on the higher res computer

With my setup, the display is a little choppy, the framerate isn't exactly realtime - but that could be due to using an 802.11g network, as opposed to -n or a wired ethernet solution, another downside is you can't drag files between the shared machine and the host, as is the case with some virtualisation packages, you still need to transfer files over the network as you would without screensharing - shared folders etc

So I guess comes the question - what would you use this for?

First up would be tech support - you wouldn't have to leave your office to be able to diagnose and fix a problem on a computer the other side of a uni campus or office complex

There's also educational benefits to it, and for the lazy people like me who need to transfer a file, or type up a tracklist from traktor, but can't be bothered getting up out of a chair

I'm sure there's a myriad of other uses to, if you've used it for something, let's hear it!

That's very cool Do you reckon there's a way to run a windows machine or maybe a different Mac with it? Btw how did you connect for screensharing, Wireless?

Oh another thing, how did you enable that contact list for Adium?

afaik it'll work across any mac computers running OS X 10.4 (Tiger) to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and they don't have to be running the same version - I've got Leopard on my Mac Pro and Snow Leopard on my Air, and as you can see in the pics above, Screensharing works both ways - but I really doubt it'll work cross platform with a Windows based machine

AS for how I connected it up, yep, wireless (802.11g) - hence why the frame rate is probably a little on the low side - with a -n or wired network it might speed things up a little, but I'll have to check
