After trying to send a long text it got split but was never received. SMS now BROKEN!

I have an annoying problem - please help?

Recently I was in Cyprus and sent a text back to the UK that was so long that my iPhone split it into three. The recipient never got the message and could not receive any future texts, but could text me fine. However, the intended recipient could receive messages if I attached a picture. This is how we got round it.

When I got back to the UK yesterday I tried just a text (with no picture) and it worked - fixed.

However this morning I sent another long text that the iPhone split into two - and she never got it. I feared this would happen so sent another, shorter, message with a picture and she got it fine. Confirming that texts can no longer be received.

How can I fix it this time?
Is it a common problem?
Why has it happened?
And can I stop my phone from splitting the messages up?

Please help, Hit Squad.

I'm on O2, other person is on Orange. I tried googling but didn't know what to search for.

I have an iphone 3gs.

What firmware you are running? have you tried a reset of the iphone?

the only way to send an sms that isn't split up, is to use less than 160 characters per message
